Well caught Ram, that is indeed the Matra! And sorry for posting this car again guys, I intended to search the thread before posting but forgot to do it!

Sorry, the 1964 NSU Wankel Spider was the first production car in the world to be powered by a Rotary Wankel engine.

Back in 1997, I used to do a Mystery Car Picture Contest for www.cybersteering.com owned by Shailesh Khanolkar and Veeresh Malik.
I had used the NSU Wankel Spider in this quiz.

Had put it up as a Guess the car post on 6th April 2007.
Being hosted on a public image server, the pic has evaporated, but this is what it was.

It was answered by V-16 here.

Felix Wankel of Germany invented the Wankel in 1954 (DKM 54, Drehkolbenmotor) (meaning Turning Piston Engine), not Mazda.

The first working prototype DKM 54 was running as far back as 1957 at NSU's R & D dept.

The German 1967 NSU Ro80 was a contemporary of the Japanese 1967 Mazda Cosmo. Cosmos were built by hand at a rate of only one per day if that.

NSU, Germany and Citroën of France formed a JV called Comotor in 1967.
The 1969 Citroën M35 coupé used a Wankel engine.

There was a smaller brother (since Germany is the Fatherland) of the NSU Ro80 was developed. It was called the VW K70. This car looked a lot like the NSU save the minor face lift and was powered by the conventional engine as opposed to the NSU's Wankel.
That car has also been featured somewhere on this thread.

Very good! You're close.

So is it
a mid '60s Skoda MB1000?
or late '60s Skoda MB1000?
or an MBX1100?
or some other model ?
What are the differences between these?
Can you do a bit better than say, "it's some Skoda from the sixties" ?

As identified within the correct period and model ballpark by FourWheelDrift, ID:516 is a Skoda 1000 MB. They all had modern monocoque bodies.

Production started in 1964. By 1969 about 4.4 lakh of these cars were produced.

Still each model and year can be uniquely identified.

This one is a 1966 Skoda 1000 MB
Its engine was a 4-cylinder 998cc ohv aluminium mill putting out 48 bhp, located behind the rear differential.

It was good for a top speed of 124km/h, and returning 14 km to the litre.
So the car is still valued today and there are many really well kept cars.

This is a neat looking car. My friend had a similar car, a blue coloured Skoda. I remember we used to go to college in it and everyone thought we were cool coming in an old car. That was I think a 69 if im not mistaken as the book said, "year of manufacture" Unknown.
It caught fire one evening and that was the end of it. It was sold as scrap to someone around 1990.

The MBX had the reverse swept C-pillar (like the Hillman Californian)
and a pillarless hardtop (means missing B-pillar)
whereas the MB had the conventional B- and C-pillars.
