This is a Morris Ital. British Leyland got Ital design to update its second biggest dog - The Morris Marina into this (the biggest dog was the Allegro which was more aerodynamic in reverse). Some suspension components of this car are descended from the Amby. However, the Ford Cortina and Vauxhall Cavelier (Opel Ascona built in the UK) had this for dinner

Hi Adi: Thanks for hazarding a guess. Yes, it is from the 1940s. No it is not a Packard. Here is another pic, sans hubcaps. The pic shows the slight V of the egg-crate grille.

What about guesses from Karl, Gogi, -GS-, Prabal, jayz, ...

No its not the Chrysler Saratoga V-12.
This is a toughie Ram. Has me foxed completely.
At one look it looks like a GM product. Definitely American or American inspired.
The grille is very Caddy/Dodge-esq. When I saw it first I swore it was the 46 Dodge too but had doubts regarding the grille. Proved right . Was not a Dodge.
Is it a LaSalle? by the looks of the Caddy type grille and it being a LWB.
Cant figure it out at all.
Was also looking at the South American connection.
Ok Ram, spill the beans......Im stuck.

As evident from the different front bumper and trim on the grille and a few minor other things not evident in the pic this is the following year's model.

Nevertheless, this is the last clue to ID the car, until I open the box. I will be overjoyed if somebody identifies it by then.

ID:501 is a 1948 Checker A2.
Checker Motors Corp. made the American taxi cab an icon.

The A2 was Checker Motors' first post-war production model.
It came out in February 1947. This taxi stayed around until the end of 1955.


The car’s front end was clearly influenced by the 1941 Cadillac. It even had a rectangular version of Cadillac's egg-crate grill.

The rear end was like GM’s torpedo fastbacks. If you notice carefully, the car did not have a trunk although an optional rear-mounted luggage rack was available.

Chicago Checker Cab shipped a large fleet of used taxis to Finland just before the 1952 Summer Olympics at Helsinki. The maroon and white taxi bearing Helsinki number plate EN-714 is one of those former Chicago cabs.

OT:India won a Gold in field hockey and K.D. Jadhav became India's first individual Olympic medalist. He won the wrestling bronze medal in men's freestyle bantamweight wrestling in the 1952 Olympics. To this day no other Indian wrestler has stood on an Olympic podium after that!

The Checker A2’s body was monocoque constructed in that the frame, girders, sides, top and floor were all welded together into a single unit.

The cab was designed so that collision damaged body parts could be easily replaced. Grill moulding sections were made of pressed steel. In case of damage, they could be straightened or replaced in sections, or the entire grille could be removed without disturbing radiator. The front fender could be removed without disturbing the grill or splash panel. The radiator could be removed without disturbing other sheet metal parts. And front fender rear extension as well as the running board could be removed without disturbing fender or any other metal parts.

The cab was powered by a flat-head straight six

In Aug 1948, an 8-passenger version of the A2, called the A3 limousine was introduced.

A face-lifted and re-engineered A2, called the A4, arrived in 1950.This had a tighter turning radius, wraparound bumpers, new rocker panels, revised front doors, a fully functioning trunk, easy-to-clean vinyl interior, and an enlarged windshield that rose higher into the roofline for better vision.

Oh gawd. That was a Good one.
Noticing the doors and the rear suicide door, on a LWB, and the no frills (no over the top chrome strips etc etc) made me think about the Checker cars, unfortunately nothing turned out in my search, even on the search engine, so I thought it might be a South American production. That was a good one Ram
And Hats of to GS (once again) for guessing right.
The resemblance to the Caddy and Dodge grill is uncanny.
