Fake or Real: 175.42 mph street racing Honda Civic

This is exciting! A Honda Civic reached speeds calculated by GPS of 175.42 mph! Is it fake, or is it real? It appears to be real! What does Team-BHP think? I don't know much about Honda's, I'm a Subaru guy. Help!

Read the full article: World's fastest Honda Civic

Statistics observed:
Honda Civic SOHC
Inline four cylinder
26 PSI
7300 RPM
174.42 MPH
Unknown turbo
Cold air intake
Modified exhaust and intake manifolds
High spark wires (plugs too?)
High flow fuel rail, injectors, pump, lines
TIAL Blow off valve
Big TIAL waste gate indicates BIG turbo

So with these specifications, is it fake? Or is it real?

It should be possible with "Forced Induction".

Finally depends on a combination of power/torque to weight ratio, bhp, torque, gearing, rolling resistance and aerodynamics.

Shan2nu and alpha 1 thank you for a quick reply. After considering the aspects provided by Shan2nu, I agree that the Honda Civic can reach 170+ mph. The long final drive gear plus high RPM and forced induction should mechanically allow it to be feasible. Can you tell what kind of turbo is being used by the speed and minimal imagery? By the size of that waste gate, I would guess T70?

I'm interested in Honda's but unfortunately I don't know much about them. Thanks for your help! I have always liked Honda and my tuner 3gsucks was talking about trading his Subaru in for an s2000. The high RPM intrigues me. He's a really good tuner so I trust his opinion, the S2000 is a beast. It will be interesting to see what he does with it!

Yeah, the S2000 is a gem of a car. With a 120bhp/ltr engine to start with, it has loads of potential.

Heres a nicely moded S2000 by Amuse - 2259cc, 550ps.

This is old news. When one starts modding a Civic, it is like a kit-car. One can do whatever he wants provided that he knows what he is doing. 1/8 mile, 1/4 mile, top speed anything. Reliable four-digit horsepower numbers are possible from four-banger Honda motors, which aren't made for forced induction in the first place- so this is no surprise. A car doing a 10-second range quarter will typically cross the trap at some 130mph. And that's in 400-meters. So 175mph isn't very far off provided one gets the gearing right and doesn't run out of revs. The fact that its just a single-cam D16 (a close cousin of our B15C2 motor) just adds to the wow factor.

The fastest Civic in the world has been clocked at 200+mph, and it was a 1.5-litre, a force-fed destroked B16 motor. This was at the Speed Week though- not on road, a good idea. Here's the article-

Shan2nu thanks for that GT1, all I can say is wow. I understand why my tuner wants an S2000!

Doomsday, wow I can't believe my eyes. A 200 mph Honda Civic out of a 1.5 liter! That's great to read, thank you for sharing!

S1400cc, what kind of drivetrain mods need to be done for a stock civic to reach 185 mph? Is it a new transmission, gears, swap, or something else? I'm curious to how cheap I can build a 200 mph vehicle. I've been thinking about a Vtech Honda Civic and watching these films and reading this info has really got me thinking. I'm not going to sell the Subaru if I can get a Civic cheap enough!

Thanks for the input everyone! Team-BHP for the win!

I'm sure Scooby fanatics won't be pleased when they find that you are trying to make a leap to the dark side.

As you would be aware of, all Nissan and Subaru fans are always hell bent to prove that Hondas are nothing more than fast shopping trolleys for uncles and aunts and only good for ricers. The point is, performance on the cheap is where Honda's strength lies. There is a spread of OEM and aftermarket options- swaps, NA, turbo, supercharger, nitrous or a combination. And most of it comes cheap (in the States) if you know what you want and your tuner knows what he is doing.

(I'm talking in the perspective of US and other countries where a buyer is spoilt for choice when it comes to performance vehicles, here in India, it is still comparatively expensive to build a Honda than something else, like a Suzi)

I wouldn't suggest you building trying to build a 200mph Honda- as for one thing, it won't exactly be cheap. Secondly, it won't be anywhere close to safe at those speeds.

I don't know if you're into that kind of thing, as you're more into dirt- try building a road race machine or a quarter mile conqueror. Both will come comparatively cheap and you'll have a lot of fun for the money. Considering they were built as 'shopping trolleys', they have quite sophisticated suspension setups from the factory (for the price they retail) and a lot of aftermarket options as well.

Try getting a hold of a hatch (EG or EK) if you're planning to go road racing and see what engine you get it with. Drop in a B18 and take it from there.
If you want to build a drag monster, well, pretty much anything will do. You should be able to get a 89 CRX or EF for dirt cheap- lightness is the key so avoid sedans, and spend money on the motor and boosting it.

Hope this helps. And BTW its VTEC not Vtech.

Thanks for the input doomsday I appreciate your information. It sounds like a Honda can be lots of fun. I don't think I could actually sell my Subaru, it's been such a good friend. I think I'd like to have a Honda in addition to the Subaru. I've put so much work into the Subaru, there is no way I could sell it. I thought about it, but I just couldn't do it.

Crazy diablo, it's a 2002 Subaru Impreza WRX check it out on Subaru Off Road

There are some crazy imprezzas running around with mindboggling numbers. Keep at it with the imprezza, buy a FWD for the off roading.
