New Headquarters of The People's Daily
The Chinese Replicas Thread-peoplesdailybuildinglooklikedubaihotel04.jpg
The recent design competition for the new People’s Daily building went through several rounds of appraisal, in the end it was the plan of Professor Zhou Qijiao of the Southeast University School of Architecture that won the final bid.

The bid proposal’s design philosophy revolve around the moral philosophy of “Round sky and square earth”, by using a computer model the building start off round and gradually turn into a 3D two-sided shape, and forms a parallel with the rectangular base. Finally the top of the building form a triangular word “人” [People], associated with the theme of the People’s Daily. The round lead-in also fulfills the requirement of the central location of the project.

The three corner of the building bulge out into massive steel pillars all the way to converge at the top, while the three sides of the glass walls are concave surfaces. The entire design is clean and simple, moreover it saves on building costs.

Southeast University School of Architecture depended on this plan to win the competition between 4 other architecture firms (China Architecture Design & Research Group, Beijing Institute of Architectural Design, Central-South Architectural Design Institute, and Zhongye Design Institute); this is also the first time in 50 years that this firm won a design project at the national-level agency in Beijing.

The new building of People’s Daily falls within the 3rd ring road in Beijing, inside the central area of the Beijing Central Business District (CBD), and in alignment with the newly completed CCTV building. The scale of the whole construction reaches over 100 thousand square meters, made up of the International Conference Center, Library, Publishing Building, etc. Among them the height of the tower is over 150 meters. This is the largest construction project since the founding of the People’s Daily, and it will receive widespread attention.

This building looks a spitting mirror image of the Burj Al Arab in Dubai.

There is a Hotel being built in London which looks similar.

Geely's eyes on Volvo??

The Chinese Replicas Thread-geelyvolvo.jpg
Geely is expected to team up with a Chinese investment company to take on Volvo according to reports. Geely believes that it is currently too small as a company to spread itself into Europe, and will partner up with a Chinese investment firm that will be able to provide cash and management skills for Geely’s forthcoming Nordic adventure.
A firm price has not been announced for Volvo, it is rumored to be around the 500million USD cash for the ailing car company, but figures as high as two billion USD and as low as 100 million have been floating around as well.

Beijing Automotive Industry Corp (BAIC) are swelling at the seams with cash after succesful joint ventures programes with Hyundai, Mercedes, and previously Chrysler, and it seems that BAIC are ready to start splashing that cash around. SAIC and Nanjing Auto have already been out with their chequebook to buy up bankrupt companies technology and branding, and it has served them them well so far. BAIC are reportedly intrested in taking over a slice of Opel from GM. The asking price from GM has not yet been announced, but it is expected to be somewhere in the 900 million USD range.
BAIC have not been effected by the global economic crisis, in fact the opposite has happened and their sales have increased an impressive 21.5% over the Jan to April period.

Beijing Auto Works have teamed up with Koenigsegg to take on Saab according to Chinese media reports from late this afternoon.
The announcement comes as a shock to many, as it was expected that Shanghai GM would take on a sleeping partner roll in Saab from GM, but it seems that GM have favoured an outright sale of the now independent car marker to a Koenigsegg/Beijing Auto Industry Corporation (BAIC) alliance.
Koenigsegg are expected to take on 100% of Saab with BAIC bringing the 290 million Euros to the table that Koenigsegg were lacking. Saab is now a step closer to being a Swedish company once again, albeit with a Chinese company to aid it.
It’s unsure what will become of the deal, as it BAIC were unsuccesful in buying Opel from GM due to the possibility of future conflict if BAIC put GM platforms and engines from Opel into production in China, a market where GM performs extremely well with little competition.

When you say they paln to take on i think you mean they will be manufacturing on their behalf and not byuing their company as such.

BAIC latest investment in Koenigsegg and Saab Automobile is the first sign of chinese automakers interest in investing in european auto industry.

I think we will see more of this in the near future.

For Saab, this is a major opportunity to gain access to both chinese capital and the chinese market thanks to BAIC. And Saab in return can help BAIC with engineering and knowhow for their products.

I am positive.

Lets hope Volvo also gets a smililar deal.

There is a editorial by Swade at Saabsunited about the BAIC-Saab deal :

My 2 cents on the inclusion of BAIC into the Koenigsegg Group - Saabs United

BYD aims to overtake Toyota as global auto leader by 2025

SHANGHAI — Fast-growing Chinese battery and automaker BYD Co. is thinking big — really big. It aims to overtake Toyota Motor Co. to become the global auto leader in under two decades, company officials say.
"It's our company's long-term target, to be China's No. 1 automaker by 2015 and to be the world's leading car maker by 2025," Jasmine Huang, a senior marketing representative for BYD, said in a phone interview Thursday.
"So far, our sales come mainly from domestic demand, but we are also thinking of expanding to overseas markets," Huang said, confirming similar comments by another BYD executive, deputy general manager Wang Jianjun, to the state-run newspaper China Daily.
Like other up-and-coming Chinese automakers, BYD has set its sights on breaking into major markets such as the U.S. and Europe. Although it started out building conventional cars, late last year it became the first automaker to launch mass production of a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, that can be charged off a standard home outlet.
Whether BYD will succeed in meeting stringent U.S. and European standards for safety and quality, as well as customer expectations for comfort and performance, remains to be seen.
Chinese automakers remain reliant on mostly foreign technology and design and are still nowhere close to meeting finicky Western and Japanese standards, but they are catching up, analysts say. China's auto industry earlier this year overtook the U.S. in market size.
BYD's goal of becoming the global auto leader is realistic because explosive growth in Asia, its primary market, will continue, said Aaron Bragman, an auto industry analyst with the consulting firm IHS Global Insight in Ann Arbor, Mich..
But reaching that goal could come at GM's expense, although there likely will be so much sales growth that most automakers will see sales gains, Bragman said. GM is the sales leader in China.
But BYD, he said, won't be satisfied with growing only in Asia. It could also look at breaking into U.S. and European car markets. Making that leap, though, will require standout products, perhaps powered by its battery technology.
BYD would have to enter the U.S. through small and midsize car markets, and that could potentially hurt Honda and Toyota, which are strong in those segments, Bragman said. In midsize cars, Toyota and Honda have the two top U.S. sellers with the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.
BYD might initially launch exports of a limited number of vehicles, just for the sake of its marketing and branding, says Scott Laprise, an industry analyst at CLSA.
"It's all about advertising and brand building," Laprise said. "That's going to be massive publicity. Don't sell anyone cars. Just let the world know you are the world leaders and then see what happens."
BYD was founded in 1995 and only branched into automaking in recent years. But it has won backing from billionaire investor Warren Buffett, whose MidAmerican Energy Holdings Co., the utility division of his Omaha, Neb.-based flagship Berkshire Hathaway, has a 9.9 percent stake in the Hong Kong-traded company.
BYD, which stands for Build Your Dreams, recently announced it has approval to get its shares listed in the southern city of Shenzhen, where the company is based.
In Jan.-August it sold 246,881 cars, just ahead of rival domestic automaker Chery Automobile Co, which reported sales totaling 240,275 units, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers. Its most popular car, the F3 sedan has been China's top selling model for three months so far this year.
But General Motors Corp. led sales in China in the first half of the year at 814,442 units, followed by Volkswagen AG, with 652,436 vehicles sold.
Toyota, which displaced GM as the world's biggest automaker in 2008, sold nearly 9 million cars and trucks in 2008, while GM sold 8.4 million.
BYD expects to sell 400,000 cars this year and to manage annual sales exceeding 10 million by 2025, Wang, the deputy general manager, told the China Daily.
Company chairman Wang Chuanfu has said he plans to begin selling an all-electric vehicle in the United States by next year.
