Lexus has announced that it will unveil the all-new ES sedan on 23rd April at the 2025 Shanghai Motor Show. The current car has been around for seven years now, with a couple of facelifts in between. The new car will be the eighth-generation model.

Lexus has dropped a teaser image and preview videos building up to the unveiling. The teaser images show a notchback design and seems that the car has grown in size too. One can expect a significant increase in wheelbase as well. It is a known fact that the Chinese love their rear legroom, so this could be one of the reasons that the new car is making its debut in China.





The video clips reveal sweep-style daytime running lights at the front and a light bar connecting the tail lamps at the rear. One can also see black accents in the bumper and large multi-spoke alloy wheels.

Lexus says that the new ES will come with “advanced electrification technologies, hinting at an improved hybrid powertrain and a plug-in variant as well. One can see a charging port cap in one of the teasers.

What’s most interesting is that Lexus is calling the new ES a global flagship model. This statement puts a doubt on the future of the current flagship LS sedan. If the new ES does have a LWB variant, this could be the end of the road for the LS.

This should be interesting especially if it is an all new 8th generation model. Rear leg room + ground clearance + interiors {and the takashami woodwork} would be of interest to me given that I already have 8 years of driving experience and ASS on the 7th generation machine.

If this car comes to India by 2026 it will make an interesting comparison with the Volvo S90 facelift below.

To me it looks more like a sportback rather than being based on the Camry.

I am glad that it's expected to be longer and have more legroom as standard rather than having a seperate LWB version for China.

If it's no longer based on the Camry, it will be less limiting and be a better overall package. The new Camry has taken the game very close to the existing ES with it's materials and design already.

Toyota Avalon and Lexus have been the twins over the last 2 decades.

Saw this video. I didn't know car OEMs released detailed videos before their official launch. I thought they only released teasers. Not sure this is authentic but sharing nevertheless. I have my eye on this car. If this comes to India by 2026-2027 my current Lexus would be 9 to 10 years old and right for a change.

I for one think this new ES would be the perfect replacement for your current steed. It is supposed to be larger than the current car and the longer wheelbase makes it perfect for being chauffeur driven as well. I really love the driving experience Lexus cars offer. Just sublime and peaceful.

With the new ES, I feel they want to shed the "Its a Camry with Lexus clothes" tag

POWERTRAINS: THE LEXUS MULTI-PATHWAY STRATEGY

ES 300h and 350h self-charging hybrids

The ES 300h features a redesigned self-charging hybrid system with a 2.5-litre in-line four-cylinder engine, producing maximum power of 201 DIN hp/148 kW *. Both front and all-wheel drive versions will be available.

This powertrain will be available in western European markets while in the east the hybrid offer will be the ES 350h. This also uses a 2.5-litre gasoline engine, but with maximum output of 247 DIN hp/ 182 kW *. Again, both front and all-wheel drive models will be introduced.

The hybrid battery has also been upgraded for higher output.

The system uses a bespoke control logic to deliver a combination of strong acceleration and fuel efficiency. As an additional benefit, the power unit’s increased rigidity helps suppress vibrations, contributing to a quieter and more refined cabin atmosphere.

Battery electric ES 350e and 500e

Two battery electric ES versions will be available: the ES 350e front-wheel drive model delivering an output of 224 DIN hp / 165 kW *, and the all-wheel drive ES 500e, with an output of 343 DIN hp / 252 kW *. Both benefit from Lexus’ expertise in advanced electrification to unlock the full potential of the new Lexus global architecture-K platform, including new eAxles which integrate both the power control unit and transaxle. Their new design is lightweight with compact packaging that helps optimise cabin and load space. The high-capacity battery is located beneath the floor, lowering the car’s centre of gravity.

The ES 500e is equipped with Lexus’ DIRECT4 intelligent electric all-wheel drive system. This provides continuous adjustment of drive torque distribution to all four wheels, according to driver inputs and the road conditions. This can vary from 100:0 to 0:100, based on data from sensors monitoring acceleration, wheel speed and steering angle. This delivers both handling stability and an engaging driving experience.

Interiors are spot on, I am really liking the exterior designs of the newer Lexus's.
They look really good in person and one has to appreciate the color choices they offer.

The Germans are playing it so safe with the White-Black-Blue-Grey only options.

I saw this Wine red LM on the road today, so beautiful.

The new ES does not look like it will look old in a few years at all.

First, the Camry and now the ES. For me, this looks like a Hyundai design philosophy. Hyundai ICE vehicles are adopting EV design, and the Lexus sedan aligns with that transition.

Time to move on from the brand. Toyota is treating Lexus as its stepchild since 2018 onwards. First ignoring the Lexus LS and making it fall behind its German competition, and now making ES the flagship " Full Size Luxury Sedan" offering. The length is nearly matching the LS and width as well. The triple beam headlight signature is also deleted!
The Camry already matches the ES with all the features and mechanical aspect in the current generation.

All the craftsmanship from the interior is deleted. No metal plate covers for ML audio system, the tasteful integration of screen is replaced by stack on Dual screens?

The exterior does not represent the traditional 3 Box rule of a luxury sedan. Boo!

I like that sky blue color. I also like the interior. Looks simple, elegant and functional.

The external design looks a bit too busy for an Executive luxury sedan. I feel like it has lost the grace of the old ES, which still looks good.

What I can't work out is the screen. One image shows a single screen. Another has an ever wider or bigger screen. I hope it ain't the latter cause that looks out of place and weird.

I am glad to see a fully Electric power train. Finally. Even if its all BYD underneath, Lexus needs this. Else the brand/model is doomed. Cause a Lexus is all about cabin quietness and comfort, electric is where they should be going.

Well done. Just get rid of that slash on the side.

The Lexus ES has always been a US market car, but looks like it has become a China market car now.

I really can't look at the new model and find even one aspect appealing.

Styling- All over the place. Like someone put a prev gen Prius, previous gen Mirai, Crown crossover, RZ into a mixer and this came out. And what is that slash on the side? (Would have looked better on something like an LC)

Interiors- Truth be told, feels like am looking at some late 90s video games graphics. When most companies are starting to realise customer's plight and planning to make amendments, Lexus just went ahead and slapped a screen tastelessly integrated and some haptic touch buttons. With a stubby gear selector to boot. And that dual screen setup? Looks some sort of billboard. European companies have been putting three screens on dashboards for years now, and this is what Lexus came up with in 2025. And that steering wheel got to be the most generic one I have laid eyes on recently.

Mechanicals- Same old TNGA-K platform squeezed to death, carryover hybrids and now a BEV version.

Repeated many times in other threads, but Lexus is like a headless chicken running around now. I believe most Lexus fanbois would be looking at Genesis products with envy as it is what they dreamt Lexus would become like.
