J.D. Power 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study

J.D. Power 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study

Derided as marketing and perception-driven but still probably and broadly indicative of overall ‘dependability’.

I’ve no insight into American brands and marques, but the usual Toyota - Lexus suspects at the top with Stellantis at the far lower end sounds about right. Surprisingly, VW right at the bottom!

Interesting to see Mini and BMW high up with Volvo(!),Mercedes and Audi so far below. I thought at least the last two had radically improved their quality in recent years? Maybe the perception still lags from past fiascos.

Zero surprise at the Corolla & Camry as usual ruling their roosts. Personally happy to see the 3 Series tops the Compact Premium individual category charts. Same is bolstered by the relatively trouble-free run that the G20/28 have enjoyed in India since 2019.

Wow! GM brands are so high up that list! But to be fair, they have increased focus on engineering since the government bailout after the 2008 financial crisis. I am a bit surprised that BMW has managed to hold in the top 10 consistently for the past few years. Sure, their 4 and 6 cylinders are quite dependable, but the N63 V8 is atrociously unreliable even today. It is surely surprising that European manufacturers with high compression ratios and lightweight engine materials are beating out the Americans' big block iron V8s with low stress outputs. I suspect EVs may have played quite a big role in the non-Japanese high rankers. Alfa Romeo beating out Mercedes, VW and Volvo in dependability is frickin' hilarious! I guess the report doesn't account for sample size perhaps.

I'd argue that life is too short to drive a Toyota Avalon. I'd rather drive something that is fun than a trouble free appliance.
