Toyota RAV4 dethrones Ford F-150 as the best-selling car in USA

Quote:
The F150 has been dethroned. According to Jato Dynamics data, the Ford F150 truck is no longer America’s No 1 vehicle. The Toyota RAV4 is.

The changing of the guard in America is a significant event given that the Ford has held the top spot for so long. The RAV4’s ascent to No 1, due mainly to the increased popularity of its hybrid powertrain, ended the F150’s four-decade reign at the top, apart from one hiccup in 2009 when the Toyota Camry temporarily overtook the F150, caused by lingering effects of the 2008 Great Financial Crisis.

Toyota Sales Rose 9% While Fords Fell 5%

Jato Dynamics tells us that F-150 sales fell 5 percent to 460,915 in 2024, while Toyota RAV4 sales rose by 9 percent to 475,193. The RAV4 has been closing in on the F-150’s market dominance for several years, but it’s never managed to overtake it. When the F-Series seized the best-selling vehicle gong in 2023, it was the 42nd time the Blue Oval truck had achieved the feat.

Felipe Munoz, global analyst at Jato Dynamics, points out that while this list only looks at individual models, other figures may be released in the coming days showing a different picture. If they do, it will be because they will be including the entire F-series family, which includes the F-150, F-250, and F-350. This list only looks at single models.

All-new RAV4 In Pipeline

Given that the current model RAV4 was launched in 2018, the fact that this SUV pulled off such an accomplishment in its later years shows the resilience of the RAV4. Toyota is anticipated to introduce a brand-new RAV4 this summer, making it more difficult for Ford to regain No 1.

Jato’s list of top sellers also reveals that sales of the Honda CR-V increased by 11% to 402,791 lobbed the big-selling Japanese SUV into third place. Meanwhile sales of the Tesla Model Y, which came in fifth place, decreased by 3% to 372,613, possibly as a result of consumers knowing that a facelifted model, which was unveiled last month, is in the pipeline.

The Camry (up 7%), Corolla (up 22%), and Chevy’s Silverado (down 2%), however, provided Toyota even more cause for celebration as it secured three vehicles in the Top 10. Others to finish in the Top 10 include the Nissan Rogue in 8th, Honda Civic in 9th, and GMC Sierra 1500 in 10th, with no Stellantis products making the cut.

Signs of things to come? Economists can say something seeing this.

I love huge American cars and a fan of the old landyachts. But could never wrap my head around the fact that the F-150 is the top selling vehicle in USA. (or do they add all the HD models and big lorries like the F-450/650/750 too?)

That said, models like the RAV4 and CR-V are what most Americans all needs. Let it help in alleviating global emissions.

This is quite literally the biggest news from the American auto industry. The F150 has been USA's no.1 selling car for the longest time, and for good reason too. In the USA, a truck is all the car you need.

The RAV4 has a massive fan following, even at this stage in its life. This model was unveiled in 2018, is 7 years old and now due for a replacement. What a way to bow out for the old generation

And has overtaken the Camry in many markets. Reason why I thought they would replace the Camry with the Rav4 in India. Looks like Toyota didn't want to give up the captive market that the Camry has to itself, while also not hurting its cash cow Fortuner.

Also Toyota did good with this generation, compared to the previous two beige generations. Also the next gen will most probably be a heavily updated version of the current one like the Camry and not all new.

Just to clarify - The link above groups all the F series models as one vs this ranking which lists the F-150 individually.

I’d buy the RAV4 in a heartbeat if they ever launched it here, even at Hycross++ pricing. I’ve say in it a couple of times overseas and the comfortable front and rear seating, practical XL sized boot combined with the strong hybrid efficiency seemed like a fabulous proposition always.

Not just RAV4. Toyota is sitting on a goldmine of potential customers who are waiting to lap up an easy to drive 5 seater from Toyota priced at par with Hycross or below it or above it. But has to be a proper Toyota.

Many are made to do with the Hyryder or forced to lug around the Hycross extra mass. Toyota seems to be flipflopping between Corolla Cross or a 7 seater Corolla Cross or a boxier version of Corolla Cross and now a ScorpioN rivalling new model. Though the model we are sure to get is a 7 seater version of the Hyryder. Rest are just in planning stage.

Costs finally catching up to tariff-land? America still has cheap gas. I guess cost of buying and maintaining a giant truck, just to take it grocery shopping and have someone flick your stuff from the open bed can get to you a little in the long run, eh? A tonneau can only do so much to protect your precious cargo. And if all other reasons fail, the Toyota comes with a frugal hybrid powertrain, is relatively stress free to own and cheap to maintain. It might also last a bit longer than the Ford trucks of today.
