Ferrari may crack down on garish & blingy customization requests

Ferrari has always been known to have a plethora of customization options for its cars and go all the way to cater to the requests of its high-end customers. But at the same time, having a lot of money doesn't always translate to having good taste.

Now according to a news report, Ferrari may start cracking down on customisation requests that don't align with the vision and class of the brand.

CEO Benedetto Vigna has hinted that Ferrari may step in to prevent some 'garish' configurations during buyer customization sessions. During an interview, he said, “We have been thinking internally maybe to pre-define the (colour) combinations. We have to pay attention because we have to defend the values and the identity of the brand. We will not make a strange car, for sure.”

In short, Ferrari reserves the right to say no to a customer. While Vigna didn't say that they were considering blacklisting buyers as reported by some, he was clear that that the brand might limit certain options, which he says is already being done. He also shed light on the brand's thinking. “There are some combinations that are not liked or loved by the second potential buyer,” he said.

Ferrari's first all electric car is set to make its debut on 9th October 2025.

Re: Ferrari may crack down on garish & blingy customization requests

In my opinion, Ferrari has got it way over their head about defining what the brand should be even after it has left the showrooms. In fact, it is the only company that bothers so much.

Dear Ferrari - Make a car that gives the best the customer asks and leave it at that. If the buyers wants crocodile leather on the dash with snake skin on the door pad and cow-hide on the seats, that's upto the buyer.

Ferrari uses it's so-called brand power to push halo model customers to buy what doesn't sell well. Eg: SF90 and now the 12Cilindri. This is already stretching it too far.
Porsche dealers too have replicated this model these days.

Now Ferrari wants a say in how one customizes it too?

This kind of high handedness is akin to LV, Hermes etc.

I will never have Ferrari money and all this doesn't/Shouldn't matter to me.

For those that do have this money aka top dollar car collectors, this is being seen as ridiculous and are shying away from Ferrari just for this reason.

Soon, there may only be one collector - David Lee (Check out his YT channel) who will pick up anything Ferrari's throws at him.

Re: Ferrari may crack down on garish & blingy customization requests

From preventing people to customise their "own" car which they've paid in full to Ferrari to the recent news about the sky high investments needed to get their special cars, Ferrari is continuously making all the wrong noises in the world. Coupled with the fact that their SF90 isn't really flying off the showrooms, Ferrari needs to be served a sliver of some humble pie.

And they shouldn't be acting all high and mighty, considering their latest and greatest right now is the 12Cilindri, which looks garish to me.

But there is a silver lining. Back in the day Ferrari road cars didn't do well, they used to excel in F1. So maybe LH is up for some 8th time greatness in red.

They are talking about customizations done by them ?

After the car is bought and if customization is done outside, they shouldn't bother.

Call me crazy but I really like the deadmau5 stuff. It's quirky and while certainly not to everyone's taste but it goes with who he is, or at least his on-stage persona.

Not a blingy attention seeking thing just for the sake of it.

Its also really well finished. Perhaps it belongs in r/ATBGE? Awful taste but great execution?

Even I liked this car. I remember seeing it in Autocar india's last page in 2013 or 2014. That sky blue has been executed well with the decal but I think Ferrari sued deadmau5.

Re: Ferrari may crack down on garish & blingy customization requests

Prancing horse have this habit from the past, guess it is in the Italian culture to have certain traditions as sacrosanct.

This reminds me of a story, when Maradona after winning the 1986 world cup wanted a black Ferrari, when the Italian big brand only generated their cars in red.

He was playing for Napoli those days and the president of the club gifted the car to him after painting it black, which costed the club double the price of the car.

The car didn't had stereo, no air conditioning and no upholstery on the inside of the doors, the football star rejected the car, until it was fitted with stereo/air-conditioning and upholstery.

Quote:
Thus, came home a black Ferrari Testarossa. Maradona also requested a Ferrari F-40 but for this one, Ferrari did not agree to paint it black. The F-40 did not come with a music system or air-conditioning either for it was a sports car.

Maradona’s representative Guillermo Coppola was quoted as saying “Diego asked about the stereo and I told him it didn’t have one… it’s a race car. No air conditioning, nothing, and he said ‘well, put it all in your …”.
Looks like they are keeping their quirky traditional habits alive

Wish Mahindra and Toyota could do the same for Fortuner, and Thar. They are fast gaining a bad reputation. Youngsters are doing crazy acrobats with them on roads, jumping dividers and fitting 10,000 lumens chinese lights to annoy other drivers at night. I was blinded by one highly modified Thar with the aftermarket lights, barely avoided crashing into a pedestrian.

Even if Ferrari can control this, there are the likes of Gemballa and Mansory from where bad taste can be outsourced.
