Consumer Reports USA 2024 - Brands making the best cars

According to the Consumer Reports in their report dated December 5, 2024, following are the brands which make the best cars in the USA for 2024, based on their vehicles’ average Overall Score—a combination of road-test scores, safety ratings, predicted reliability and owner satisfaction data.

Consumer Reports is an independent, nonprofit member organization that works side by side with consumers for truth, transparency, and fairness in the marketplace.

The top & bottom 5 rankings :-

Top 5 - Subaru, BMW, Lexus, Porsche, Honda (BMW was No.1 in 2023)

Bottom 5 - Jeep, Rivian, Land Rover, GMC, Dodge

However from this list, even high-scoring brands can have low-scoring models so its model specific weighted average score.

From this list of 32 brands, the India relevant mass market brands are ranked as below -

5) Honda
7) Kia
8) Hyundai
9) Toyota
15) Nissan
26) Volkswagen

As per Consumer Reports, their ranking for the Overall Score for individual models is based on four key factors: the road test, reliability, owner satisfaction, and safety. For the road-test score, they put vehicles through more than 50 tests.

Predicted reliability ratings are based on problems reported by members from 20 possible trouble areas in Consumer Reports’ Annual Auto Surveys.

Owner satisfaction predictions are based on whether Consumer Reports’ members said in their surveys that, given the chance, they’d buy the same vehicle over again.

Safety includes an assessment of any available crash-test results from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and extra points or deductions assigned to vehicles that come standard with key crash-prevention systems.

Toyota & Lexus are no longer the most reliable brands, says new Consumer Report study

According to the latest 2024 brand reliability report from Consumer Reports, Toyota & its luxury sub-brand Lexus are no longer the most reliable car brands in the global market. The study reveals that Subaru has overtaken the Japanese car giant and now holds the top spot on the list.

Consumer Reports base their study on data collected from over 3,00,000 automobiles sold between 2000 to 2025. The overall reliability score is an average of several individual criteria such as owner satisfaction, safety rating, expected reliability & road test results. The study also only considers car brands that offer "sufficient data" for at least two of their current models.

Subaru received the highest reliability score of 68/100, just passing Lexus & Toyota in 2nd and 3rd positions, respectively. Lexus had an average score of 65/100 while Toyota scored 62/100.

The study states that the reason Subaru managed to outscore Toyota & Lexus is the sharing of components across their model range. Steven Elek, who oversees Auto Data Analytics at Consumer Reports, stated, "Subaru’s cars share many reliable components. This commonality means that when Subaru redesigns a vehicle, it can make fewer incremental changes by carrying over dependable systems. This reduces the risk of new problems."

Consumer Reports also stated that this year's study had the highest number of hybrids and electric vehicles than ever before. The study stated, "This year’s survey results have more data on hybrids and electric vehicles than ever before, revealing how newer technology’s teething pains start to dissipate after two or three years. These findings reinforce why it’s best to wait a couple of years before buying an all-new model."

Coming back to the list, Honda & Acura complete the top-5 most reliable car brands list, scoring 59/100 and 55/100, respectively. Other brands in the top 10 include Mazda, Audi, BMW, Kia & Hyundai.

Very interesting stats, and all the more intriguing is that Suzuki is not in that list.

This really skews the results. Subaru's line-up is such that different models can easily share components and platform but that's impossible for Toyota. How can a Sequoia share components with a Siena or either with a Corolla?

Suzuki isn't sold in the US.

The top six are Japanese brands. Says a lot about the consistency of Japanese reliability.

Whatever happened to Mercedes-Benz's reliability rank? It is nowhere to be seen in the chart.

Isn't there already a thread (Consumer Reports USA 2024 - Brands making the best cars) on the same topic a week ago?

Guess there realluy hasn't chanegd much in Subaru for decades, other than them dipping their toes in the diesel market disastrously in the 2000s for Europe.

Boxer engines, superbly honed AWD system, manual tranmissions and consistently improved CVT automatics. Not much deviation from the basic formula, Plus most of their production is still in Japan.

Pretty good form, considering that Subaru (along with Mazda) were the sick men among Japs regarding reliability in the 80s and 90s.

I believe Toyota still owns close to 20% of Subaru and shared parts with Toyota and Nissan. I read the report as 20% Toyota, Toyota sub brand, Toyota. It’s all Toyota in there.

Suzuki stopped selling cars (bankrupt) in the USA more than a decade ago. They lost big money in Kizashi project.

Sequoia may not be sharing much with the Corolla, but you'll have to check the level of sharing across the Toyota-Lexus Truck/SUV range. Some of them are literally the same vehicle underneath!!

Re: Consumer Reports USA 2024 - Brands making the best cars

Sure, there is no Suzuki. But what about Chinese - MG, GWM and the likes. I would also like to know how do people get their issues, warranty claims sorted with the Chinese brands when they run into trouble with the local dealer. Do they send emails to the OEM in China and how responsive are they when it comes to addressing those issues.

I did come across an incident in Australia where BYD made a customer go to the court to get the batteries replaced under warranty. BYD finally had to get them replaced, however they tried to market that as a goodwill gesture instead of warranty replacement.

None of them are sold in the US due to high tariffs on Chinese cars especially EVs.

Consumer Reports USA.

Only brands that are sold there will be in the report. Though looking at how they were doing in the GCC markets, spare parts availability and support is poor. Not sure how the situation is right now, as there has been a heavy push in model introduction and legacy dealerships taking up dealerships in the past 2-3 years.
