Toyota Celica sports car will return 18 years after production ended, confirms company VP

Yuki Nakajima, Vice President of Toyota, has confirmed during a recent event in Japan that the company will bring back the Celica sports car.

Rumours of reviving the Toyota Celica nameplate have been doing the rounds for a few years. However, till now no company executive had confirmed the same. Now though, reports state that Nakajima unambiguously stated at an event, "We’re making the Celica!"

Nakajima added, "To be honest, there is no sign of it right now. However, there are many people within the company who are eagerly awaiting the Celica. So… I wonder if it’s okay to say this in a public forum, but we’re doing the Celica!"

Although, apart from the confirmation, no other details of the Toyota Celica have been released at this point.

Toyota is also said to be working on a list of models, which includes the Supra Mk6, Celica Mk8, MR2 Mk4, GR86 Mk3 and the GR GT3. Apart from the Celica, the Japanese carmaker is yet to officially confirm the other models.

Will believe when it is in the market.

Since Akio Toyoda took over, Toyota has been mulling a sportscar triumvirate (not including the GR Yaris/Corolla). So far they have joined hands with Subaru for the 86 and BMW for the Supra. A smaller one (S-FR concept) to go against the MX-5/Miata had been on the anvil for almost a decade now.

Now it is said that the next gen 86 will be developed independently by Toyota, while a small MX-5/Miata fighter is being developed with the help of Toyota's small buddies- Daihatsu and Suzuki. Now whether a more expensive sportscar will be branded as a Celica or Supra is to be seen.
