Chinese brand Geely will produce the IC engine for the next-gen Mercedes-Benz CLA

According to reports, the upcoming new-gen Mercedes-Benz CLA will be powered by an engine produced in China.

The IC engine on the upcoming CLA will come in the form of a 2.0-litre four-cylinder manufactured by Horse - a 50:50 owned company between Geely & Renault. The petrol engine manufactured by the Chinese brand is said to produce 250 BHP and 360 Nm. Reports also mention that while the engine will be produced in China, the car's catalytic converter will be installed in Germany to help meet emission regulations. As per earlier speculations, the upcoming CLA could also get a 48V mild-hybrid system paired to the IC engine, using a gearbox-mounted integrated starter motor.

Mercedes-Benz has already teased the upcoming CLA on a few occasions. The new-gen CLA will be based on the brand's MMA architecture and will get both mild-hybrid and pure-electric powertrain options.

Reports also state that apart from the China-produced engine, the new CLA is also expected to feature an intelligent driving solution from Momenta - a Chinese startup. Mercedes was an early investor in the Chinese startup, participating in its Series B funding back in 2017.

The all-electric Mercedes CLA is expected to get an 89.6 kWh battery pack, paired with a 175 kW electric motor mounted on the rear axle. The electric CLA could offer up to 750 km of max driving range (WLTP cycle). It will have an 800V architecture, allowing 400 km of range in 15 minutes of charging.

The all-electric version of the new-gen Mercedes-Benz CLA will debut in 2025. The ICE-powered model could come at a slightly later stage.
