2025 Mercedes CLA to come with Chinese Geely engine

The new engine is to come from Horse Powertrain Limited, a joint venture between the Renault and Chinese automotive giant Geely.

The reported Horse engine won't be the first time Mercedes has looked elsewhere for engine supply with the current A200 hatch powered by a Renault-sourced 1.3-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder.

Horse was set up in May 2024 with the companies collaborating on new engines, giving Geely a leg into Korea via Renault’s tie-in with Samsung as well as aiding the French marque’s fortunes in China. It is entirely separate from Renault’s alliance with Mitsubishi and Nissan.

The CLA’s engine will reportedly be built in China with final assembly, including required catalytic/petrol particulate filters, installed in Germany.

Geely and Mercedes-Benz have been working together n project since 2020, according to Forbes.

There is more Chinese technology bound for the CLA, including the adaptive driver assistance systems. These will be powered by technology from Momenta, a company in which Mercedes-Benz holds a stake.

With the current globalised world we live in, there is no product that is entirely German, entirely Japanese, entirely French or entirely Indian. Some component or the other will always be from some country other than the one in which the brand is domiciled.

In the last 2 decades or so, the Chinese auto manufacturers have transformed themselves from lousy copycats to makers of quality products that are accepted by top markets in the world. In fact, the government backed economic power that some Chinese companies wield cannot be matched by even the largest carmakers in the world.

Purists will frown upon this, but it is inevitable. On a lighter note, Geely does know a thing or two about making Mercs

A purist may say that some of the brand ‘cachet’ will go away. But then, most products from the Big Brands in the world nowadays are made in the Philippines, Vietnam, China, Taiwan and so on.
As long as there is a positive effect on the product from a ‘holistic’ perspective, there should be no detriment to ‘brand cachet’.
And yes, the Chinese have definitely become masters at Electronics and EV’s and so on. It would be silly to ignore the visible evidence of this across the world.
