Scrapped 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL 'Alloy' Gullwing auctioned for $9.3 million RM Sotheby's recently held an auction for a rare 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing. The 300 SL Gullwing, part of "The Junkyard: Rudi Klein Collection," sold for an impressive US$ 9.3 million this weekend in Los Angeles, USA.
The Mercedes 300 SL is said to be the 26th of 29 examples produced, but the only "Alloy" Gullwing to come with a black exterior and red interior. Reports state it was painted silver at some point in its lifetime.
The Gullwing was delivered new to racing driver & 24 Hours of Le Mans winner, Luigi Chinetti. In 1976, Rudi Klein acquired the car for $30,000, and since then the car has been sitting in the central building of the junkyard. The car has 45,600 miles on the odometer and has reportedly never been driven out of the yard in nearly 50 years.
RM Sotheby's also states that apart from the exterior colour, the 300 SL Gullwing features all the original parts with the matching-number engine, rear axle, transmission, and steering box.
