Europe needs to cancel its 2035 fossil fuel ban to reduce reliance on China, says BMW CEO In 2023, Europe passed a landmark law that said, from 2035, all new cars sold on the continent should have zero CO2 emissions - effectively banning the sale of all fossil fuel-powered vehicles.
Now, according to media reports, Oliver Zipse, CEO of BMW, has said that Europe must cancel its 2035 ban on fossil fuel-powered vehicles. The global automotive market has changed drastically over the past year since the landmark law was passed in Europe. The BMW CEO feels that removing the ban is a must if the continent wants to reduce its reliance on China, which has grown to become a leader in the global EV segment.
Zipse has always been pushing for the regulators to permit alternate fuels such as e-fuels, biofuels and even hydrogen fuel cells. The BMW CEO stated, "A correction of the 100% BEV target for 2035 as part of a comprehensive CO2-reduction package would also afford European OEMs less reliance on China for batteries." He further added, "To maintain the successful course, a strictly technology-agnostic path within the policy framework is essential."
Apart from BMW, even carmakers like Volkswagen and Renault, along with the Italian government, have called for the 2035 target to be either loosened or delayed.
