Toyota sells over 830 Camry sedans on average every day in the USA

According to media reports, the Toyota Camry continues to witness an upward trend.

Toyota which recently released its Q3 2024 results announced that sales of its Camry sedan grew by 1.7%, registering 22,934 units. In terms of year-to-date sales, Toyota Camry sales witnessed a 4.4% growth, totalling to 227,576 vehicles by the end of September 2024.

Taking these numbers, reports calculated that the 273 days between January 1 and September 30, Toyota sold an average of 833.6 Camry sedans per day. This average though goes even higher when one excludes Sundays (preventive laws in some states don't allow dealerships to operate) and other national holidays - as the number of sales days reduce.

What's interesting is that unlike its smaller sibling, Corolla, the Camry is available in just a sedan form. Talking about the Corolla, the car also managed to register an equally impressive 6.9% growth with 177,092 units of sales. Using the same calculations, this comes up to 648.6 Corolla models sold per day.

The best-selling Toyota though still remains an SUV - the RAV4. The Toyota RAV4 registered 350,331 units of sales in the first nine months of 2024. This translates to an impressive 1,283 units sold per day.

With Gas hovering around 4$ to 4.3$ avg the below sentence is enough to justify this trend.

2024 Camry
Fuel economy: 46 mpg city/46 highway/46 combined (manufacturer’s estimate). Regular gasoline.

That may be a hyped 19.5~Kmpl but for even 13-14Kmpl real world, a 230+Bhp car is real sweet to own.

Now imagine a Southerner asking a Desi in a Toyota - Kitna Deti hai??

(Edit - read USA Southerner, Texan Truckers :-) )

It’s a brilliant car for daily driving, decently quick in a straight line. Super soft controls and very easy to manoeuvre and park even in tight city conditions, stable on highways and very low NVH.

Plus, it’s one of the most reliable vehicles one can buy, one of its biggest USP’s is the ultra low cost of long term ownership.

The Toyota Hybrids are fantastic on fuel efficiency. I used a 2023 Camry hybrid for a few weeks and was able to comfortably average 47-48 mpg with sedate driving.

What shocked me was a Prius I rented -- it gave me ~67-70mpg over several tanks of usage, with sedate driving (much more than EPA estimates of 57mpg).

Ive found that with petrol cars the ARAI/EPA estimates are higher than what you'll get day-to day. But with hybrids, a calm and skilled driver can easily exceed the rated mileage. All govts (US, India etc) are doing too much to boost EVs and too little to boost Hybrids which are very practical.

The Camry has improved so very much over the last 20 years that unless Toyota greatly upgrade their Lexus ES300 it is in real danger of getting swamped by the Camry lock stock and barrel. The difference is so little that the extra big bucks you spend on an ES is not worth the price. Good morning Toyota. Need to wake up.

+1. They're getting dangerously close in looks (2024 Camry is no longer the plain jane cousin, the front arguably looks better), and the relatively 'opulent' interior on the Lexus is probably now the only differentiator. The badge too, of course, but there are plenty of people who'd like to get the understated T and save a pretty penny too.

Rumour mills are that the LS would face the chopping block and ES would move upmarket. In many markets, the ES has already replaced the IS and GS in Lexus line-up, including India. And the next gen ES would move more upmarket to fill the shoes of the LS.

Killing of the LS seems blasphemous for Lexus, but that is what rumours suggest.

One of the only things the Camry has going against it is that it's one of the most frequently used vehicles by taxi operators in most developed countries. Even that, for someone who doesn't care too much about snob value, is actually a good thing - proves that the car is reliable, parts will be affordable and readily available for a long time, it's value won't drop too much by the time they want to sell and of course, illustrates it's great gas mileage!

I think that's also why the SL variant comes with different rims, sporty body work, etc. to try and build a gap from variants of the Camry used as taxis.

Toyota hybrids easily match their ratings in regular driving. My 2015 Avalon (with 143k mi on the odo) still delivers exactly what it was rated for - 39 - 40 MPG.

Post 2018 upgrade, the gap between Camry and Avalon / ES has narrowed.

Toyota discontinued the Avalon and replaced it with the U-G-L-Y Crown. The station wagon version, the Crown Signia looks nice though. I've a feeling the ES sedan might be discontinued and replaced with the Lexus version of the Crown Signia.

Aah, forgot about the whole Crown sub brand thingy straddling Toyota and Lexus.

@landcruiser123, since you are in the States, how many Crown crossovers (the raised sedan thingy) do you see on the roads vs the Crown Estate (Signia)?

Not sure if the ES would be stopped. The ES has to take the role of multiple sedans. Also the RX and TX exists, which means a Lexus version of Crown Signia doesn't make sense.

I have seen 3 (Three - not 30 or 300 lol) Crown's in Dubai & Sharjah in last 1 year. The concept of a 230,000AED Toyota Sedan in between 2 Camry taxis is the only presumed reason I would guess it is a sales dud.

I bet the sales did not cover the costs of the 50*20 foot wide flex banner HQ prints seen over Toyota Dealers here.

Guess they should have brought the Crown sedan instead of the crossover thingy. The Crown really had a super strong brand value in GCC markets, atleast in KSA and Kuwait (not sure in SUV crazy UAE), and seems like they squandered it away.
