Next-gen Supra to be built in-house & use only Toyota tech; Feature hybrid & EV powertrains

According to media reports, Toyota is said to be investing in its next range of sports cars. The Japanese car giant already has plans to revive popular models such as the Celica, MR2 and GR86 coupes. In addition, Toyota is also reportedly working on introducing the next-generation GR Supra.

Initial reports about the next-gen Supra suggested that it would be introduced exclusively as an electric sports car. However, fresh reports state that the next-gen iteration of the iconic sports car will feature a turbo-petrol power unit when it makes its debut in late 2025. Although, a pure-EV version is also slated to follow sometime in 2026.

Earlier rumours also stated that the upcoming Supra would use a revised version of the same BMW 6-cylinder engine. Again, however, the latest report now states that top executives from Toyota have decided that the next-gen Supra will be built in-house and only use Toyota technology.

The fresh reports further mention that the next-gen Supra will be powered by a Toyota-developed 2.0-litre 4-cylinder unit. This engine, though, would feature some form of electrification - either a full hybrid or plug-in hybrid tech. The electrified powertrain is said to produce around 350 to 400 BHP.

The mix of hybrid and EV powertrains on the next-gen Supra fits perfectly with Toyota's multi-pathway philosophy.

Re: Next-gen Supra to be built in-house & use only Toyota tech; Feature hybrid & EV powertrains

Only the Lexus LFR with a twin turbo V8 has been spotted testing.

Rest all are just rumours floating around of the MR2-Celica-Supra trio that has been going around for more than a decade now.

Supra- The Supra just might become a showcase for Toyota new family engines, with the super boosted 2.0l making 400+bhp, maybe in electrified form. Would be interesting to see how that turns out.

Celica- The 86 exists. Though if it would make to the next generation is doubtful. Maybe they would rebrand the next gen to a Celica as it has more history than the 86/GR86.

MR2- The MR2 was mid engined RWD, the S-FR concept was front engined RWD. Then there is rumours of Toyota, Suzuki and Daihatsu working together on a small sportscar. whether it will be a kei-car roadster or an MR2 successor or a Miata-MX5 rival is yet to be seen.

Anyway, us Indians will get a Taisor GR-S or Glanza TRD edition. So why worry.

I personally don't think the next gen Supra is coming any time soon (definitely not in 2025) as this Mk V was launched in 2019.

This is a good news. The current Supra, no matter how good, has been subject of endless "its a BMW" ridicule. There were legitimate reasons why Toyota did that but a pure Toyota design and underpinnings is what iconic nameplate such as Supra deserves and nothing else.

I am also pleasantly surprised by Toyota's newfound fervor for enthusiast cars! There is also a talk of Miata competitor apart from already existing GR86. Fun times ahead.

Re: Next-gen Supra to be built in-house & use only Toyota tech; Feature hybrid & EV powertrains

Next Gen Supra:

- The key point of the next model is that it will switch to Toyota's own development rather than joint development with BMW.

- The heart is not equipped with the traditional Supra's inline 6, but Toyota's newly developed 2L inline 4 turbo.

-Two types of the new 2L turbo have been announced: a maximum output of 300 PS and a maximum torque of 400 N·m and a maximum output of 400 PS and a maximum torque of 500 Nm, but the latter seems to be used for the Supra

-In addition to gasoline fuel, the company is also considering the use of carbon-neutral fuel.

- A parallel hybrid system will be introduced. This system uses a motor generator that places the clutch between the engine and the AT, making it possible to drive only the motor depending on the situation.

-In addition, Toyota will also season the body design and suspension.

- Transmission will likely be available with either a 10-speed AT or an 8-speed AT.

- The next model is scheduled to appear around 2027.
