Mitsubishi had considered basing the new Pajero on the 2025 Patrol

The Drive Australia has reported that Mitsubishi Motors - which is now part of the trilateral alliance consisting of Nissan, Renault and Mitsubishi was talks with Nissan to base the new Pajero on the 2025 Patrol that was released recently (2025 Nissan Patrol revealed | Landcruiser rival gets refreshed inside out). But seems like the talks fell through given that the Patrol and Pajero are models with different philosophys with the Pajero for one being much more affordable.

The Pajero is one of the most iconic Mitsubishi models with a huge fan following including in India and the production of the last generation was stopped 2022 (which was sold in India as the Montero).

The revival of the Pajero is key to resurrecting the Mitsubishi brand which is pretty much dead except in some SE Asian countries and perhaps basing the Pajero on the new Patrol just might've worked.

Quote:
The 2025 Patrol is Nissan’s first all-new ladder-frame-chassis large SUV in 14 years, while the smaller-sized Mitsubishi Pajero was discontinued in 2021 after the fourth-generation version was produced for 15 years.

Rumours have swirled since Mitsubishi joined the Renault-Nissan Alliance in 2016 that the new Patrol and Pajero could share platforms to amortise the cost of a box-fresh off-road-focused SUV in a landscape quickly moving towards electrification.

“It’s not a B-segment, C-segment [vehicle], this is our flagship, this is what Nissan is,” he said.

“We had discussions, but it did not materialise – it’s a complex discussion.”

However, when pressed if said discussions were ongoing or finished between Nissan and Mitsubishi, Mr Bailey chose not to answer directly.

“I’m not answering because, not that I want to say there’s nothing secret really going on, [but] the message from me is ‘this is our work, our essence’ and there’s no discussion [about that].

“It would be really difficult [to share the Patrol platform].”

Re: Mitsubishi had considered basing the new Pajero on the 2025 Patrol

The rumours were strong ever since Mitsubishi joined the Renault-Nissan alliance, though it seemed odd as the Pajero was half a size smaller than the Patrol and had different philosophies. Just look at how low and sloping the Pajero/Montero bonnet is compared to the high and mighty ones in the Patrol and Landcruiser. Functional vs looks.

Thought since the Patrol was always playing second fiddle in sales to the Landcruiser and Nissan not really in a healthy state (chasing volumes), they might share the platform with Mitsubishi. Looks like they don't want to share their core models. FAir enough. Only loser is Mitsubishi who has stopped developing new platforms and is looking at a future of using models from Renault and Nissan.

Pity the giant of the 90s who even tried to buy out Honda.

Living in the Gulf as a kid, at one point Mitsubishi's lineup was the most superlative - the Lancer was better than the Corolla or Sunny though expensive, the Galant & Magna drove better than the Camry or Maxima, every Kuwaiti college kid had a Colt. Only Honda made better cars! Oh and everyone with a 'manager' position had a Pajero.

Mitsubishi really shot themselves on the foot.

Re: Mitsubishi had considered basing the new Pajero on the 2025 Patrol

Mitsubishi is done and dusted. Nothing can save the company now. A Pajero based on a Patrol will give the Pajero no identity of its own.

We once had a 2004 Galant when we were in the US. I have a soft corner towards this brand because of that car. I was 4 years old when we had that car, and I still remember how long it used to look.

I can totally relate to this and agree completely. The aura around the Pajero while growing up is what inspired me to get one when i could afford one. Almost 10 years of ownership with me and now sitting at over 281,000 kms this is one heck of a reliable vehicle!

Pics from an offroading trip with family over the weekend.

True. The only reason Honda was more yuppy than Mitsubishi in GCC was the absence of commercial vehicles in Honda's line-up. Mitsubishis rode better, had more features and were styled good too.

The first SUV I travelled in (the Suburbans and Landcruisers were more of wagons ) was a dark coloured Pajero that my uncle had for an extended TD over the weekend. The barn doors, tailgate mounted spare, steps to clamber over, more vertical space for us cousins to travel in the bootspace than stationwagons, black leather seats. Was a refreshing change from the sedans/stationwagons/pickups/LCVs we were used to till then.
