Sadly no relevance for India

Though the new 1.5l engine could possibly be used in the next gen Grand Vitara/Hyryder hybrids.

So refreshing to see a manufacturer shift from a 3cylinder back to a 4cylinder unit glad to note that the folks at Toyota have their heads screwed on tight still.

The render looks so much nicer than the actual one in the first post though the rendering isn't accurate to the actual. The design language seems to be an extension of the latest Prius.

Mazda and Toyota follow what they say as 'right sizing' instead of just blatant downsizing. Reason the existing 1.5l is a 3 cylinder is because it is part of a modular engine family with one cylinder loped off a 2.0l four cylinder.

Though the new 1.5l has become four cylinder, the new 2.0l version is said to replace the existing 2.5l NA and 2.4l turbo engines, so it is kinda downsizing if you look that way. The reason why many companies are going for 'right sizing' nowadays is to meet future real world emission/fuel efficiency tests. None of the lab tests which made companies go for extreme downsizeed engines which were not really efficient in the real world.

I think public perception also plays a small part. For example I would be very wary buying a big car with a 3cylinder motor. Even Koenigsegg has had to kill their 3cylinder Gemera since almost all Gemera customers opted for the V8 version with only 3 or so going for the 3 cylinder leading Christian to convince them to convert their bookings to the V8 to ease production.
