Re: New Audi A5 globally unveiled as a replacement for the A4 sedan

I guess over the next few years we will see the nomenclature migration in play with ICE taking on the odd numbers and EVs taking on the even ones.

On the A5, I for one loved the new design. In a world where I’m finding neither BMW nor Mercedes particularly appealing on the design front (with BMW by far the worse offender and Mercedes being simply acceptable but not exciting) Audi’s design language is a huge relief. In typical Audi fashion, it takes its design language visibly forward without doing anything too silly. The only exception are those LED signature lights feature which I continue to find superfluous and too gimmicky for my taste.

On the size, I’m really happy that it’s grown a bit bigger. The A4 / 3 / C are just a tad too cramped at the back for the price points they occupy and this feels like it’s much more “right sized” even for an entry level saloon. Thumbs up on that front. However, I’m just not a fan of these 180 - 200 bhp petrol engines finding place even in entry saloon variants. I really do wish they’d sit in the 250 bhp space even in the C / A4 segment, just like the 330i did.

Brand new PPC platform shows that Audi seems to be investing in parallel in both ICE and EV segments. Again encouraging because I really don’t think we’re ready for a world any time soon where one format exists to the dramatic exclusion of the other. I think the next few years will be exciting from a product perspective for Audi fans, with numerous all new generations of their line up expected. Hope they can get their overall act together to maximise from these next generation of products.

Finally, on the estate, LOVE IT! I’ve always had a soft corner for estate styled cars for their practicality and admired them regularly when I’m traveling to Europe. Of course it’s a variant that definitely won’t find its way here - just no market for them in India.

Re: New Audi A5 globally unveiled as a replacement for the A4 sedan

Though it's not as clean and understated as the Four Rings of yore, it's still a neat and tidy design. Audi, time and again, proves that contemporary designs need not be in-your-face, this and the Q6 being the prime examples. This is a lesson that should be paid close attention to by the designers from Munich.

Re: New Audi A5 globally unveiled as a replacement for the A4 sedan

If AUDI prices it right, brings the TDI model to India then it can surely capture the D-Sedan segment again as this design looks a lot more fresh than what they used to do. If they price it between 55-65 ex. sh. Then they can surely eat up the market of 3 series and C class

Re: New Audi A5 globally unveiled as a replacement for the A4 sedan

The new Audi A5 is the replacement of both the A5 (F5) and A4 (B9).
Audi will reserve the A4 nameplate for an upcoming electric midsize sedan to compete against the Tesla Model 3.

Re: New Audi A5 globally unveiled as a replacement for the A4 sedan

Now, since S5 will be on same A5 platform (which will be assembled in India), is there any likelihood that this time S5 will also be assembled in India, leading to better pricing then current CBU S5 and hence a competitive alternate option to m340i?

Re: New Audi A5 globally unveiled as a replacement for the A4 sedan

As an owner of A5 B9.5, it pains me to see that Audi invested to
(1) Make dancing/dynamic OLED headlights and backlights that cost a limb to replace if damaged.
(2) Remove the gear knob to swap it for a (blender) switch. Drive by wire systems never really needed gear rods, but there is a certain feel about handling these levers when driving the car and that's gone missing.
(3) No more capacitive physical buttons.
(4) Add that additional screen for the front seat passenger. (I don't know of anyone who sat in the front seat and said, I wish there was a screen for me too)

I'm glad Audi-
(1) Added 66 mm to wheelbase and approx 24 mm to height and reduced 60 KGs.
(2) Added electronically tinting panoramic glass roof.
(3) Continued with real exhaust tips (looking at you Mercedes)
(3) Improved driving dynamics that remain neutral, just the way most Audi A series owners prefer with slightly higher power on offer.

In my humble opinion, Audi A5 B8 was the best generation of Audi A5. In the following gens, they have ceased to innovate and started re-inventing and resorted to adding gimmick features. At this increased price point, the new A5 doesn't make a good case for itself. I'd suggest a pre-owned A5 B9/9.5 that can be purchased at 50% cost.
