BMW leads luxury car sales in the first half of 2024; Outsells Mercedes, Audi & Porsche According to media reports, BMW led the luxury car sales chart in the first half of 2024, outselling its main rivals, Mercedes-Benz & Porsche.
The German luxury car brand registered a 2.3% increase in total sales in the first six months of 2024 with 1.1 million vehicles. Of this, BMW's battery electric vehicle sales accounted for 180,000 units - a massive 34% rise compared to the same period last year.
BMW's closest rivals, Mercedes-Benz registered a 6% drop in sales with 960,000 vehicles. However, its electric vehicle sales recorded a significant 17% drop in sales with just 93,400 units. Mercedes even released a statement, "The ramp-up of electric vehicles slowed in key markets, while the company focused on healthy growth in a market environment characterised by heavy discounting."
The other German car brand, Audi also registered an 8% drop in sales in the first six months, selling 833,000 vehicles; although its EV sales did improve by 1.3%. Porsche also registered a similar 7% drop during the same period with 155,900 units of sales.
