BMW leads luxury car sales in the first half of 2024; Outsells Mercedes, Audi & Porsche

According to media reports, BMW led the luxury car sales chart in the first half of 2024, outselling its main rivals, Mercedes-Benz & Porsche.

The German luxury car brand registered a 2.3% increase in total sales in the first six months of 2024 with 1.1 million vehicles. Of this, BMW's battery electric vehicle sales accounted for 180,000 units - a massive 34% rise compared to the same period last year.

BMW's closest rivals, Mercedes-Benz registered a 6% drop in sales with 960,000 vehicles. However, its electric vehicle sales recorded a significant 17% drop in sales with just 93,400 units. Mercedes even released a statement, "The ramp-up of electric vehicles slowed in key markets, while the company focused on healthy growth in a market environment characterised by heavy discounting."

The other German car brand, Audi also registered an 8% drop in sales in the first six months, selling 833,000 vehicles; although its EV sales did improve by 1.3%. Porsche also registered a similar 7% drop during the same period with 155,900 units of sales.

Its actually great.
Mercedes has been downgrading, they need to feel the dent. Branding is not everything

Actually happy to read this. Mercedes has been taking it's customers for a royal ride. Cheap plastic quality, sub par fit and finish, small displacement engines from Renault and THAT 2.0 engine shoved out as AMG! About time they got a jolt of reality that it's brand is only as good as the product. Customers have a lot of other better if not equally good options. I hope this makes Mercedes return to form and make great cars again.

Re: BMW leads luxury car sales in the first half of 2024; Outsells Mercedes, Audi & Porsche

Simply goes to prove that only a select % of people or enthusiasts ( looking at us) hate the current design language and the average BMW buyer has zero issues with how the car looks now. But overall very much deserved. They are a cut above mercedes and audi in everything right now. Better interiors, better ride, better reliability, arguably better tech, the M2 & M4 are great fun to drive, the styling leaves something to be desired but merc & audi aren't doing too good either design wise.

And frankly they didn't even really need to try, mercedes bet on EVs but has been losing touch with their customers on the electric front and as a result of that investment their SUV platform is in need of a refresh, and audi's interiors haven't changed much, same laggy infotainment and aging piano black everywhere.

May be a more interesting matchup if EV demand picks up a bit and/or if mercedes/audi walk back and invest a little more into their ICE lineup (Mercedes has already announced plans to so – along with more reserved/traditional EV styling), but for the time being seems like BMW nailed it with the versatility of their lineup. 3-series/i4/330e/M3 all a bit of a compromise but they pulled off that compromise well. I don't even need to explain the B48 and B58 brilliance which has helped tons with the reliability reports in last 6-8 years.

I'd like to know how they performed in the China market. Especially on profitability.

Not to forget, Mercedes and VW as well!
