Ferrari destroyed over 4 lakh counterfeit items in 2023; Including 3 cars

Italian car brand Ferrari recently revealed an infographic on social media, which shows how it destroyed over 400,000 counterfeit products in 2023.

It includes thousands of fake Ferrari merchandise ranging from eyeglasses to shirts to shoes and much more. However, the standout was the crushing of 3 cars wearing fake prancing horse shields.

As seen from the infographic, the Italian car brand destroyed over 1,00,000 fake clothing items, 91,000 eyeglasses, over 60,000 watches, 57,500+ counterfeit wallets, 30,000 bottles of perfume, 17,000+ pairs of shoes and bags, as well as over 13,000 belts. Ferrari also destroyed 800 kick scooters, over 800 scale models, 1000+ balls and over 11,000 labels.

Ferrari has always been very protective of its brand and logos. The Italian carmaker also introduced an "Anti-Counterfeiting Reward Scheme" last year. This scheme allows people to report a fake Ferrari-branded product to the company. People helping the brand track down counterfeit products receive an "official thank you" and a "complimentary Ferrari gadget".

Re: Ferrari destroyed over 4 lakh counterfeit items in 2023; Including 3 cars

Was it worth the effort? Just wondering aloud here.

I'm a Ferrari fan, I'll never be able to afford an actual Ferrari, but have spent on an 'officially branded' sweatshirt on a trip abroad. When I was younger, I was a much keener fan but there was no way I could have afforded even those sweatshirts. The 'fake' merchandise was more affordable and probably because of that I at least sustained the interest to buy something 'official' later on.

The people who can really afford the cars and the expensive official merchandise are not going to bother with the fakes. The people who buy the fakes actually do the brand a favor with free marketing. No one is really fooled into believing that any of these fakes have anything to do with Ferrari. Fake cars are certainly much more serious, but for the rest, I'm wondering what actual harm does it do to the brand?

I believe it's an exercise to maintain exclusivity and associate the brand with money, which people who like the attention would be willing to pay for it.

In fact, they have no desire to increase production of their cars: they are famous for reducing production quantity and increasing prices. Link:https://www.carscoops.com/2024/06/fe...olumes-capped/

I find many Scuderia Ferrari watches on flipkart. Wondering if they are fake too.

Looks more of a brand building/marketing campaign in my opinion.

Anticipated outcome might be to not only increase the loyalty/equity/pride towards owning a product from the brand from existing clientele but also subsequently to gain brownie points towards the brand from the prospective buyers and a clear, fancy, effective marketing campaign of word-of-mouth from the not so privileged who might not be a business prospect but would still indulge in sharing the fancy news to others resulting in the brand being strategically marketed/registered in the minds of consumers as a premium and righteous product raging war against the fakes to protect its integrity.

They are extremely exclusive & snooty.
A cheap imitation does more harm than good.

I personally feel the actions of crushing fake cars, wallets etc. is justified as a brand needs to be a brand. But, couldn't they have donated the clothes to some charity which helps poor kids, refugees and needy people?? They are in more need of a clothes than showing off merchandise.

Am more interested to know about these three cars.

Other stuff we can understand as it maybe made by some companies as counterfeit products. But cars? There is no fake Ferrari as such. Some may have stuck the prancing horse shields on existing models. That wouldn't come under counterfeit product, would it?
