Suzuki Jimny pickup, hybrid and EV derivatives a possibility, says Suzuki Australia GM

According to a media report, Suzuki is open to offering multiple derivatives of its popular Jimny 4x4 SUV. The Suzuki Jimny, currently available in 3 and 5-door SUV versions globally, could soon get a pickup, hybrid and EV derivative in Australia.

Michael Pachota, General Manager, Suzuki Australia, said, "Anything that starts with Jimmy ends in sales." Talking specifically about the derivates, Pachota mentioned, "The project, I would say, is not dead. Imagine a Jimny with two seats at the front and nothing at the back?". The GM also mentioned how the more efficient derivates of the SUV could help lower the brand's fleet-wide CO2 emission levels, especially with Australia implementing a 'New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) in 2025. Pachota stated, "I'd like to see other variations of the Jimmy product – variations that could probably even help with NVES."

As per the reports, a Suzuki Jimny EV is expected to arrive in 2030 - said to be one of the five battery-electric models planned by Suzuki before the end of the decade. Before the EV's arrival though, Suzuki will introduce a hybrid derivative. The Jimny pickup is still under consideration for a global release. Reports also suggest that the Jimny EV will be introduced in key markets like Europe, Japan and India as part of the company's EV push.

In case Suzuki decides on Jimny pickup with a double cabin, then this is it!

I doubt the pickup version would be double cab based. It has to be single cab setup considering the wheelbase.

With such large rear overhang, this double cab setup will toss out anything you keep in the bed on encountering the slightest bump

Suzuki Jimny Horizon is a special farewell with a retro twist.

The limited edition marks the end of the line for the ICE-only Suzuki Jimny in Europe, paving the way for an electrified successor.

The 900 units of the Suzuki Jimny Horizon are now available at select Suzuki dealerships in Germany, priced at €32,340 ($35,000). For context, the base price for the Jimny in the German market is €29,490 (equal to around $32,000 at current exchange rates).

- The Jimny will return to Europe and the UK with a mild-hybrid engine in an upcoming facelift.

- Suzuki has confirmed that a fully electric version of the Jimny is under development, and will arrive sometime before 2030.

Suzuki Jimny EV will not make it to production.

Suzuki Jimny electric would ‘ruin’ it – global boss

"If you talk about the Jimny EV, I think it would ruin the best part of the Jimny,” says president Toshihiro Suzuki.

Quote:
I think the core strength of the Jimny is the right weight.
Instead, Toshihiro Suzuki wants to focus on continuing the Jimny line with "professionals". "If we want to keep providing the Jimny to the market as tools for the professionals, maybe the e-fuel, or biofuel utilising the ICE technology would be the way to keep the Jimmy supported in the future."

For time being, we can say.

This is a company who initially said no to Diesel. Then introduced a Fiat Diesel engine, and at the fag end of Diesel era, launched their own Diesel engine and stopped it after 6 months.

With so much changes in the policy based on market conditions, we can say that this decision was based on the current EV market slowdown. Times may be changing, so be their decisions.

IMO, they will leave the Jimny as is with updates to its TCE version only as a rugged off-roader. (biofuel/strong hybrid)

As 4x4's for ice/snow etc., especially for global markets they will have the likes of Suzuki e Vitara and many BEVs to cover that segment.

It was their initial plan to have 6 BEVs by 2030. But now, with many manufacturers slowing down their EV plans, Suzuki will be the first company to apply a sudden brake on their future BEV plans.

E-Vitara may go as per the current plans, but further launches may be delayed, IMO.

Even with all the moves by Tata and other companies, monthly EV sales in India is around 10K units only. That is just 2.5 - 3 % of total car sales in India. Suzuki is not a company who cares about this 3%. Once the demand increases, they may rethink.

EV penetration is not as big as expected in 1 - 2 years back.
