Bugatti Tourbillon - Successor to the Chiron

Meet the Bugatti Tourbillon, the successor to the Chiron. It arrives with a naturally aspirated 1775bhp engine, a 0-62mph time of 2.0 seconds – and a £3.8 million price tag.

Gone is the W16 engine, but Bugatti has never been disposed to downsizing and that venerable unit is replaced by an all-new, naturally aspirated V16. For good measure, it’s assisted by a sizeable hybrid module made up of three electric motors and a 25kWh battery pack. Peak combined power is a dizzying 1,774bhp, with Bugatti confirming the Tourbillon will also come with a 37-mile electric range.

This is not going to affect my buying decision in any manner whatsoever, but neither the chiron nor this one look like new cars, but just facelifts and upgrades of the veyron. Nothing exciting visually, no matter what new Vmax is touted.

Personally, I think it’s fantastic! To be fair, it’s hard to improve upon the Chiron’s design and styling.

They’ve taken it up a notch now, with that intricate steering column and instrumentation that mimics the workings of an expensive mechanical time piece.

They’ve gone from making a really fast and powerful road car (Veyron) to making an absolute work of art that boutique car makers like Pagani and Singer would be proud of.

The staggering statistic about this incredible machine is that even with 3 motors and all the batteries, it still weighs less than the Chiron!

And the instrument cluster is pure art, Bugatti is now giving serious competition to Pagani in that department

Now, that's how you cater to a proper rich enthusiast.. this one's definitely a collectible. Just like exclusive and premium limited edition watches.

Exactly! Analogue clusters like this will never age, very classy. I actually though Bugatti were coming out with a watch when I saw the promo on Twitter/Insta.

Sadly, these things won't see much daylight either as they will be locked away deep in some temperature controlled chamber for many years, waiting for the next acquisition.

Re: Bugatti Tourbillon - Successor to the Chiron

Trivia on the Tourbillon:

1) Powered by a naturally aspirated 8.3 litre V16 engine that revs up to 9000 RPM developed by Cosworth - this is the first production car since 1930 that came from the factory with a V16 engine (although BMW and Rolls Royce had experimented with them in the past if my memory serves me right).

When talking about V16 engines, the BRM V16 Formula 1 car from the mid 1950s also comes to mind.

2) Also powered by three electric motors - two on the front axle and one at the back, mounted on the gearbox, which also assists in reversing the car.

The electric motors generate as much power as the NA V16 engine, together making a staggering 1775 horsepower.

3) 0-100 km/h in 2 seconds! 0-300 in under 10 seconds! But Mate Rimac and the chief designer at Bugatti emphasised that this car is no longer about outright performance.

4) Amazingly, it is lighter than the Chiron! It is also shorter than the Chiron by 33 mm, and it’s noticeable!

5) Lots of trick aero-wizardry that can’t be noticed immediately, including various ducts on the front end that aid in downforce and keeping the drag coefficient as low as possible.

It also uses little hidden air ducts all over its bodywork to accelerate air and ‘pressurise’ it at the intake side, in the absence of turbos.

It has one of the largest rear diffusers on a production car that also incorporates the blown-diffuser concept from F1 circa 2010-13 (it utilises the exhaust gasses from the exhaust pipes to accelerate the air from under the diffuser, thereby generating more downforce and negating the necessity of a fixed wing)

6) The most intricately designed instrument cluster that has three dials - the central dial houses a chronograph-inspired speedometer and tachometer, and the dial to the right displays presumably both torque and power figures (generated by the V16 engine) in real time. Craftsmanship at its finest!

7) The solitary digital display is a screen that swivels out of the central dash - for connectivity only (CarPlay and the like) - and remains hidden away when not in use.

8) Not a single part is shared with the Chiron / Nevera. All new from ground up. Only 250 will be made. Already sold out.

Bugattis have always made engineering masterpieces with the objective of applying their stamp of authority on the competition as far as numbers and stats go.

The EB110, Veyron and even the Chiron to some extent have always been cars that push the boundaries of what is possible for a road car to achieve. But they were never truly desirable works of art. Just extremely expensive and impressive machinery.

The Tourbillon joins the likes of the Aston Martin Valkyrie, the GMA t.50 / t.33 and the Pagani Utopia as the ultimate poster-cars of today. Possibly the most desirable modern Bugatti ever.

Re: Bugatti Tourbillon - Successor to the Chiron

Can strongly recommend checking out the Hagerty video by Henry Catchpole on the new Tourbillon.

What I found most interesting were the observations from Henry to the end of this video - it is still a massive technological show-of-force, but with the coming of the EVs, blazing acceleration figures are not the headline anymore. Hypercars need to go through a reinvention as well, and focus on the other things that make them special - for instance, the emphasis on precision mechanics of this car.

That's an epic looking meter console

The car name make complete sense as the meter console is developed with the help of Swiss watchmakers to mimic the tourbillon mechanism of high end mechanical watches. It's reported that the titanium piece has more than 600 parts and weighs just 1.5 pounds. Source

Oh Wow!. In that case, I would like to know what is their definition of outright performance

Re: Bugatti Tourbillon - Successor to the Chiron

Wow. It is NA and have almost identical displacement as in Chiron (8.0L), which had quad turbos, but produces 335 hp more (25kw battery of course). That is insane. Apparently changing from W16 to V16 had made crankshaft increased by 40cm but the overall car length increased only by 2.7 cm. That's incredible designing.

Props to Rimac for not wanting it to be complete electric and developing a completely new engine.1775 hp road car is unbelievable. All the super cars manufacturers should take a que from Bugatti that investing in R&D in ICE will still increase the enthusiasm in the automotive world than simply switching to EVs.

The rear is definitely inspired by the Mclaren P1. The NA V16 sounds sweet with the help of EC motors, it pulls relentlessly till 440 kmph, that's insane.

I agree. Be right back, calling my Bugatti dealer to cancel my booking. Unacceptable, we should be able to tell designs apart. Instead booking the XUV 3XO, which has more distinctive changes.

I now miss the Grand Tour and old Top Gear even more. They sang paeans to the 2 older Bugattis in a way that no one else could. Giovanni!

Extraordinary machines. Even watches made in their likeness are out of reach for most of us. Most hypercars are louder, more brash and in general shouty- that quiet jet-engine like whoosh as it passes by is something no other car can achieve.
