End of an era | Iconic Nissan GT-R R35 production to end after 17 years

One of Nissan's most iconic models, the R35 GT-R, is finally set to go out of production, ending its 17-year run.

The Nissan GT-R R35 was first launched in 2007, replacing its even more iconic predecessor, the R34 Skyline GT-R. The R35 GT-R even earned the nickname 'Godzilla' after dominating the touring car races in Japan and Australia. The sports car from Japan in its stock form came with a 3.8-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol engine with 565 BHP. It was paired with a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, sending power to all four wheels. However, the engine was extremely mod-friendly, allowing tuners to boost the power output to almost 1000 BHP in some cases.

Over the years, Nissan has introduced two major facelifts, along with a bunch of smaller updates to keep the model relevant. The Nissan GT-R R35 was discontinued in Australia in 2021 and Europe in 2022. North America is one of the last global markets still offering the GT-R. The automaker, though, confirmed that the production of the GT-R in the US will run till October this year.

Ahead of it going out of production, Nissan has unveiled two special 'farewell' iterations in the form of the Skyline & Takumi Edition. Both special edition models come with a bunch of exclusive elements, highlights and paint schemes.

Nissan hasn't revealed any details of the next GT-R. However, reports do suggest that the successor could come by the end of the decade with an electric powertrain.

What an amazing machine, I wonder whether Nissan is planning a replacement for the legend, Still remember when I first started reading about this as a teenager

The original version produced about 480hp and blew everything away in its path, it made the likes of Porsche up their game - this thing went through the 911 turbo & the GT3 of the time as if they meant nothing. Hope Nissan does justice to the legacy.

Had the good fortune to drive this a few years back.

Incredible performance and handling, comparable to cars 5-10x its price.
