BMW has taken the wraps off its all-new entry-level model, the 1 Series, for the global markets. The latest iteration of the BMW 1 Series features a completely revamped design, both to its exterior as well as interiors - bringing it more in line with the brand's latest design language seen on its bigger siblings.



The new 1 Series is also the first model from BMW to drop the 'i' suffix from its petrol-powered versions. The new entry-level hatchback will be offered in a range of trims, powered by petrol, diesel and mild-hybrid powertrain options. The hatchback will be manufactured in Germany and is expected to go on sale by the end of this year.



Talking about the exterior, the new 1 Series now features a freshly-designed set of headlamps with integrated LED DRLs, along with a smaller kidney grille as well as a longer and flatter bonnet compared to the previous model. The hatchback also comes with newly designed LED tail lights and all-new front and rear bumpers. The 2024 BMW 1 Series is also 42 mm longer than the previous model.



Inside, the 1 Series gets a complete overhaul. This includes a revamped dashboard, now featuring a new 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.7-inch touchscreen infotainment screen running the latest iDrive OS. Other features include a new gear selector and leather-free upholstery all around the cabin.

The BMW 1 Series is offered in four variants: 118d, 120d, 120 and M135. The two diesel variants come powered by a 2.0-litre engine producing 148 BHP and 360 Nm. The BMW 120 is powered by a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine producing 154 BHP and 240 Nm. The range-topping BMW M135, though, comes with a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine churning out 296 BHP and 400 Nm and sends power to all four wheels via BMW's xDrive. Of these, the 120 petrol and 120d variants come standard with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. All engines are paired with a 7-speed automatic transmission as standard.

It looks pretty good, but it doesn't look like a BMW from the front . In this particular model, the grill reminds me of Kia's tiger nose grill and the front end overall resembles the old Kia Sportage and the global Fiesta to an extent:



The M135's 296 BHP doesn't look impressive on paper considering that the Mercedes-AMG A45s gets 421 BHP. That's a difference of 125 BHP, which isn't small by any means.

There is the M2 to compete with that.

As a hatchback lover, I am happy to see this.

But not sure if they'll offer this in India. And at what price, if they do.

It does look good in my opinion - which is getting to be a rare thing you can say about BMWs in the last few years.

It looks a little bit Figo, a little bit Punto from the front. Both of which are cars I love.

Having driven a diesel for 600 miles, the diesel will be missed. Ample torque and quite peppy. Handling was excellent, much better and more characterful compared to the Golf. Interiors were well put together.

The Indian market is very price-conscious, and I doubt that any luxury car maker will launch it's small car here.

Mercedes launched a small car, the Mercedes A class, in India back in 2013 at around 23-24 lakhs. However, there were hardly any takers.

Looks like my Ford Focus in a good way. I love fast hatchbacks and this car could be just the car to accompany my Focus. The Focus is a keeper.

I guess just like 2 Series, this one will have only one variant with AWD capabilities and rest all will be FWDs.

Saw this upclose when it was still being testing last month around Munich, it feels like an evolution over the pre-LCI version but I don't like it one bit. It doesn't look like a BMW and like a beefed up Kia from all sides.

It kind of look like volvo v40 cross country did a nose job from Korea. It’s a good looking car nonetheless.

Looks can be polarizing. It instantly reminded me of the global Ford Fiesta. Looks decent in my opinion. Considering the popularity of the M340i, if this(M135) gets launched in India around 50 lacs, it could be very successful.

50 lacs will be a pipedream but yeah that’s the perfect price point for it to enter the market. Sadly I don’t see it being brought to India for sometime. I have a feeling that it won’t even sell particularly well in developed markets ( mostly Europe as US doesn’t get BMW hatchbacks as far as I know)
