According to media reports, Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schafer has stated that its popular hatchback, the Polo, could continue to be on sale for at least another five years.

In 2022, Schafer stated that it made no sense to offer small cars beyond the EU7 emission regulations as it would have added anywhere between 3000 - 5000 GBP to the cost of a Polo. However, with the EU relaxing the Euro7 emission regulations, VW could continue to offer the Polo hatchback for that much longer.



Schafer stated that the revised 'EU6e' ruleset is "not as crazy as positioned initially", hence "Polo will carry on".

The new emission regulations were initially set to be introduced this year but were heavily watered down in response to large-scale criticism from the auto industry. These new watered-down rules will be implemented from September 1, 2024, and will have little impact on the cost of homologating the Polo.

Schafer also hinted that the Polo could get more updates in the near future. He stated, "We will keep it fresh. The car runs well. It's a good entry into the brand."
