According to reports, Toyota is developing a new paint technology that will allow its cars to change their paint colour using heat and light.

The new tech has been in development for two years, but the company filed for its patent at the USPTO (US Patent & Trademark Office) just last month. As per reports, the paint on the cars reacts to various wavelengths of heat and light to create different visible colours.



The patent mentions how Toyota intends to have its cars leaving the factory with a single colour but with a colour-changing material. Once the car reaches the dealerships or a Toyota facility, its colour can be changed as desired with the right equipment. The equipment at the Toyota facility/dealership will consist of large panels that would first heat the paint and then emit specific wavelengths of light, which would react with the paint molecules to get the desired look. The car also comes with temperature sensors, ensuring the correct parameters are achieved during the entire process.

The reports also clarify that because the process requires very specific conditions, owners of such cars don't have to worry about colour changes when parked or driving in sunlight.
