Toyota unveils sixth-gen 4Runner SUV 15 years after the last model arrived

Toyota has taken the wraps off its new-generation 4Runner. The 2025 Toyota 4Runner is the SUV's sixth-generation iteration and comes 15 years after the 5th-gen model was first introduced.

The new 4Runner comes with a complete refresh compared to its previous iteration. This includes a new architecture, a new crop of engine & transmission options and a revamped design. Starting off with the exterior, the 6th-gen 4Runner features a front-end design similar to the Toyota Tacoma. The 4Runner also gets prominent fender flares housing massive off-road tyres. The new Toyota 4Runner now comes with a wheelbase that matches the likes of the Land Cruiser and the Lexus GX550. Apart from the standard variant, Toyota will also offer the 4Runner in a TRD Pro and Trailhunter trims.

Moving inside, the 6th-gen Toyota 4Runner seems to have a dashboard almost identical to the Tacoma. This includes the instrument cluster, central stack of buttons, switches and knobs and even the 4WD transfer case. The 4Runner gets a 14-inch central touchscreen infotainment unit with wireless Apple CarPlay & Android Auto, along with plenty of other on-road and off-road equipment and driver-assist systems.

The 6th-gen Toyota 4Runner is offered with a 2.4-litre i-Force turbocharged 4-cylinder unit producing 278 BHP and 430 Nm. There is also a 2.4-litre i-Force Max 4Runner Hybrid with the electric motor sandwiched between the engine and transmission, taking its total power output to 326 BHP and 630 Nm. Both engines come paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

It has the same wheelbase and engine as the new J250 Land Cruiser launched in the USA, 4Runners price would be around 45-55k mark which isn't too far from the new Land Cruiser. Would customer cross shop between the 2 now ?

I just love how rugged and functional it is, especially the interior. And that too at a time when everyone else is moving onto overly minimalistic designs, with every control on screens and overdone ambient lighting. Hope it carries over to the new fortuner.

I love it. The 5th gen was a very nice-looking car and the fact that they didn't fiddle with it too much makes me very pleased. Not many car companies do hat anymore.

Props to them

Yep, so close. Then again, the difference maybe like how the previous gen Sequoia and LC200 was in the US market. at a glance may look same, but dig and you will find the differences.

So far it looks like 4Runner has RWD, AWD and part time 4x4 options, with both the 2.4l turbo and 2.4l hybrid on offer. Also there will be a good number of variants compared to the LC250. The LC250 has just one engine/drivetrain option with three variants only.

That is something am looking forward too. Hope they don't luxurify the interiors for the Asian market, unlike the 4Runner that is targeted towards offroad/lifestyle market.

Re: Toyota unveils sixth-gen 4Runner SUV 15 years after the last model arrived

4Runner is like the "Fortuner" of USA & other big markets. Oldschool, fiercely loyal following, premium priced, not the best-in-class yet very popular, typical Toyota attributes (great utility, offroadability, reliability) and top-class resale.

It's a workhorse of an SUV that really felt old / outdated in many areas. Much like the Fortuner.

This 6th-gen 4Runner looks H-O-T. An overhaul was overdue.

Thats the first thing that strikes us. Visually, the vehicle exudes robustness and utility, which I think should be the basic characteristics of such vehicles.

The pivot towards very functional design for exteriors and interiors by Toyota for its big market models over the past few years is in such a contrast with what we are seeing in India from all manufacturers - minimalistic and plush interiors, over done exteriors.

Sad that they discontinued the engine that helped it garner such a cult following: the 4.0 L NA V6

A true workhorse.

A turbo i4 for a off-road SUV? I'll pass.

I'd rather get a Nissan Frontier pro 4x, and maybe add a luggage rack at the back.

I wonder why our Indian manufacturers don’t do it for their cars ? Heck few of the companies don’t even get their brochure right here let alone an overview like this.

I just wish Toyota had kept the Fortuner under 40L (which is what it should be) and launched the 4Runner here in the 50-60L.

Re: Toyota unveils sixth-gen 4Runner SUV 15 years after the last model arrived

I like what they have done with 4runner, I hope that it drives as well as it looks. I have one 5th gen in the family and I love how it is very rugged and how it feels right at home on all sort of surfaces. What i did not like about it though was the pretty old gear box - which seems quite slow and definitely not very fuel efficient. Additionally - it lacks some creature comforts and dated tech. Seats are not too kind on the back and entertainment unit particularly shows age.

This vehicle definitely needed a refresh and I love how Toyota have incorporated that familiar design language while giving it a makeover. I think hybrid powerplant would be the one to go for.

Whoever is in market for a rugged vehicle (and flexible budget) - I think it would be tough decision between 4runner , Land Cruiser.

Damn if you do, damn if you don't. The 4.0l V6 while rockhard reliable is slow and inefficient today.

Though Toyota could have avoided downsizing heavily. Ford/GM still sells decent sized V6s and NA V8s alongwith their turbo four cylinders. Toyota has changed wholly to turbo petrols for the US market.

Nah, not happening in the wildest dreams. The 4Runner is kinda the Fortuner equivalent in USA, made in Japan and is available only in LHD. The 4Runner/Fortuner/SW4/Hilux Surf all trace their roots back to a Hilux with a canopy on its bed. USA got its own Hilux equivalent in the 90s- The Tacoma. And the SUV version of the Tacoma became 4Runner, while the SUV version of the Hilux became the Fortuner.

The 4Runner by the looks of it has a 2.4l turbo and 2.4 hybrid with no manual transmission available and still made in Japan. The next gen Fortuner will be assembled across the globe in LHD and RHD, and while it will share the TNGA-F platform with the Tacoma, it will still continue to have NA petrol, diesel and manual/automatic tranmission options. So wishing for the 4Runner to be launched in India is same as wishing for the GMC Yukon to be launched in India.

Hence, the word 'wish', not hope.
