Toyota Prius hybrid sales jump by 138.6% annually; Clear indication of hybrid's popularity

Toyota has released the sales figures for the first quarter of 2024. The latest figures show the popularity of Toyota's hybrid models compared to its EVs. The Toyota Prius Hybrid led the charge, registering a 138.6% year-on-year increase - translating to 13,327 units of sales. During the same period in 2023, Toyota sold 5,586 units of the Prius.

Toyota Motor North America registered a 20.3% increase in overall sales. Reports suggest that the growth was driven by models like the RAV4, Corolla, Camry and Prius, all of which, are available as hybrids. Even the Toyota Tundra enjoyed a 31% increase in sales, registering 36,215 units, including its hybrid trims.

Coming to its EVs, Toyota's all-electric offering, the bZ4X, registered 1,897 units of sales in Q1 2024 - which is still an 11.7% increase compared to last year. Its more premium sibling, the Lexus RZ, also brought in 1,603 units in sales - an 18.6% increase.

Sadly none of the above models are going to be sold to the average car buyers in India (although in North America and Europe, they are considered as cars for the middle class buyers).

For context, the Toyota Camry itself demands a permium of INR 55 Lacs here (which itself is unaffordable for the majority of our car buyers). Imagine if Toyota introduce the latest RAV4 and Prius models here... I doubt their prices will be affordable for most of us car buyers.

At the moment, Toyota is managing by re-badging Suzuki cars for the average car buyers here, but IMHO these cars are nowhere near the quality and performance of the RAV4, Camry or Prius that are popular in North America. I am not sure for how long this trend is going to continue
