Toyota unveils Glanza-based race car in South Africa with larger 1.5-litre petrol engine

Toyota has unveiled a new race car in South Africa, called the 'SupaStarlet'. The new SupaStarlet is based on the familiar Toyota Glanza hatchback and will feature in a new Supacup Series in Africa.

The new race car, built as part of Toyota's GR Racing Program, is aimed at developing budding racers. The GR Racing Program covers a wide range of racing levels, starting from go-karts and going all the way to international events like the Dakar Rally. The new Supacup series will slot between the go-karts and Toyota's GR Cup race series; creating a platform to enhance budding race car driver's experience while moving up the ranks.

Coming back to the Toyota Glanza race car, the SupaStarlet gets the full race car treatment. This includes a fully stripped-down interior, roll cage, centre-locking wheels with slick racing tyres, racing bucket seats with multi-point racing harness and a massive rear spoiler.

While the mechanical upgrades haven't been revealed, reports do state that the Glanza race car is powered by a larger 1.5-litre petrol engine. It produces 103 BHP and 138 Nm and comes paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic gearbox.

How is one supposed to go racing with that ancient 4 speed auto?

Am sure it will be the 5-speed MT.

Back to the car, this news reminded me of the awesome Liva 1.5. Clean (but old) looks, nice 1.5L motor, smooth MT, neutral suspension, spacious interiors (I also loved the Etios 1.5L for the same reasons):

That being said, I don't wish for a Glanza 1.5L at all. The Fronx 1.0 Turbo MT has a way better motor and is super fun to drive !

Isn't the Baleno/ Starlet already offered stock with the K15 engine. Looks like a one-make racing like the Etios racing they had in India.

They had made a rally Starlet/Baleno with the pre-facelift version having a 2.0l turbo enigne and AWD. Wonder if it was one-off or used for rallying.
