USA: GM outsells Toyota to retain title as the top-selling automaker in 2023

According to reports, General Motors retained its title as the top-selling automaker in the USA in 2023.

The American carmaker shrugged off a hit from the auto strike to register 2,594,698 sales units in 2023 - a 14.1% increase from the previous years. Toyota, on the other hand, managed 2,248,477 units; a 6.6% increase over its sales numbers from the previous year.

The high sales are said to be thanks to the easing supply issues and the sustained demand in the market. The US automotive market recorded 15,499,244 units of sales in 2023 which is the highest since 2019 when it registered 17,044,011 units.

Reports also stated that with the sustained demand for vehicles, car dealers also offered generous incentives & discounts to clear their inventory; something they had been holding back for the past two years.

EVs also accounted for 8% of the total vehicle sales in 2023 and is expected to grow to 10% this year.

That's good for GM. I think quality and certainly the looks of US car makers has improved a lot in the last decade and also have many trims that satisfy the consumer.

I loved GMs SUVs and always rented the Tahoe or the Sub-urban on outstation trips. Sometimes wondered what is in second row when driving alone or after that. That was how huge they were. Typical American vehicles on US highways

GM is No.1 and Hyundai outsells Stellantis.

Quote:
GM sold a total of 2,577,662 light vehicles in the U.S. throughout the 2023 calendar year. This represents a 14.1% increase over 2022 and is the company’s best result since 2019 when it sold 2.9 million vehicles.
Chevrolet remained GM’s best-selling brand, shifting 1,699,244 vehicles, a 13.1% increase over 2022 while GMC accounted for 563,677 sales, an 8.9% jump. Interestingly, it was Buick that experienced the most significant jump in sales with 167,030 units arriving in the homes of shoppers, a 61.4% rise from 2022.
Sales of GM’s all-electric vehicles totaled 75,883 units, or 2.9% of its total volume.
The Toyota Group, comprising the Toyota and Lexus brands, stands as the second-best selling automaker in the United States, with 2,248,477 deliveries in 2023, marking a 6.6% increase compared to 2022.

Ford’s 2023 sales reached 1,995,912 vehicles, reflecting a 7.1% increase over 2022 and representing its strongest performance since 2020.

The Hyundai Group, consisting of Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis, had a highly successful year in the U.S. with sales increasing by 12.1% to reach 1,652,821 units. This achievement secured its position as the fourth-best selling automaker in the U.S. in 2023, behind GM, Toyota Motor, and Ford Motor Co.
It also moved ahead of Stellantis, which includes the Chrysler, Dodge, Ram, Jeep, Fiat, and Alfa Romeo brands, and reported a 1.3% decline in sales to 1,533,670 units.

Meanwhile sales of Honda and Acura models proved particularly strong last year, jumping collectively by 33% to 1,308,166 units.

Other carmakers to report noteworthy gains include BMW with sales of 397,521 units (+9.3%), Mazda with 363,354 sales (+23.2%), Nissan/Mitsubishi with 986,136 (+21%) and Subaru with 632,086 (+13.6%).

Is the chip shortage issue over in the USA or even world wide considering sales have grown for all major auto makers?

Re: USA: GM outsells Toyota to retain title as the top-selling automaker in 2023

Toyota could have done better had they got vehicles. Most of their fastest-selling vehicles, like Corolla, Camry, Highlander or RAV, are all on a long waitlist. I have seen many such businesses going to companies like Mazda/ Subaru in the past few years.

American companies, whether Ford or GM, are better in this regard. They have a concentrated market like US/ Europe and a larger network of dealers. Toyota/ VW operates globally, and usually, when the demand is high, the one nearer to the customer gets a larger share. Handling logistics when a lot of your production is in Japan can be a big handicap.

Toyota needs to step up its investments in other countries like Malaysia and India for Exports. They should have purchased the Ford plant in Gujarat and gone aggressive with some of the models. There is no reason why they cannot produce a Highlander or an LC300 here in India for exports. They had all the money, demand, know-how but less will to realise the true potential of the future manufacturing countries like India.

Exactly what I thought when I saw the news. There is no way anyone can beat Toyota other than Toyota itself. I know many friends in the US going mad waiting for the LC and Sequoia models last year. Because of the non-availability of new cars, the used cars are also in high demand as well.

If they concentrate more, region by region and increase the production rather than waiting or lagging decisions (usual jap style) they will lose a lot of market share. Come on, Toyota, find some ways to increase production FAST.

Toyota India do not want to work & it is chicken & egg story with the Japanese HQ.

Former (I have dealt with top management as business vendor) are happy with astronomical margins on Indian models & investing in producing export models for developed countries won't pay as much. Maruti Suzuki's collaboration just serves the purpose/ strategy.

The Jap HQ is happy investing in putting money SE Asian markets than India. The Indian management can only get bit better with Jap expat at top now than in past. I things change to happen in future, but still it will take time.

Tbh, that's a surprise. The general feeling was that GM is a struggling entity that still make subpar automobiles! At least that's the feeling I use to get from the media.

All Toyota Hybrids are having a long waiting period. Currently, RX450H has about 6 months of waiting period and is having about 18-20% mark up over MSRP. Toyota Sienna Hybrid has mark up of about $10k over MSRP.

Matter of fact, most Toyota dealer's lots are deserted currently. They just don't have enough cars to sell.
