Turkey Police add Ferrari, Porsche & other supercars to their fleet for free

According to a report, the police department in Istanbul, Turkey, have added several supercars to their fleet.

The Turkey police fleet is said to have 23 cars ranging from supercars, high-end luxury vehicles and EVs as well as a few daily-driven models. Some of the notable models in the fleet include a Ferrari 488 GTB, a Porsche Taycan Turbo S, a Bentley Continental GT, two Land Rover Range Rovers, various Mercedes-Benz models like the G-Class, GLS, E-Class and A-Class, a few Volvo XC90s, various generations of the Audi A6, a BMW 1 Series, a Peugeot SUV, a VW Golf and a Nissan Juke.

As per reports, the vehicles belonged to an Australian, Hakan Ayik, who was running illegal operations in the country. The cars were part of a bust and were confiscated at the time of his arrest. Turkey's Minister of the Interior, Ali Yerlikaya, a month after the arrest of the Australian, took all the confiscated cars and transformed them into police vehicles.

Speaking at a ceremony where all the vehicles were unveiled in their police attire, Yerlikaya stated that all the units would be "at the nation's service."

I thought Cop cars are utility driven more than anything else. Why would someone have a Ferrari in their fleet. I have seen some of these exotic cars in the lineup in some Arab countries, but I felt it was more of a show-man thing than anything else.

I wonder if it would have been cheaper to sell these cars and just buy cars meant for patrolling. The maintenance cost of these vehicles would be a bomb in a few years apart from the fuel costs.

No wonder the country is going through an economic turmoil. Clearly the higherups have no sense of ecomonics whatsoever. Dude why would someone have a Bentley and Ferrari for doughnut and baklava eating cops?? Cost to maintain, fuel costs and additional equipment for making them a proper police cruiser would alone cost a fortune.

I am sure this is even close to the dumbest things some politicians do. Anyways RIP to those cars.

I'm glad. It's way better than what happens in India.

If you guys saw the pedigree rotting away in CGO Delhi in the open and the underground parking, you'd cry rivers of blood. RRs, the odd Italians, and oh so many 7s and S classes. And this is what is accessible to see.

For what its worth, the Dutch Highway Patrol used Porsches for several decades:

Plot twist: The mafia still have their hidden trackers in the cars and now can track the cops realtime. Too risky even if they’ve stripped them and checked if they’re bugged.

Re: Turkey Police add Ferrari, Porsche & other supercars to their fleet for free

Won’t be shocked to see these end up being used as show cars in the near future. That being said, I know that while cars like these are not cheap to maintain, a sparingly used show fleet may add much more to tourism revenue rather than actually catching bad guys.

I know how Arab countries just added another tourist attraction overnight by just arranging supercar police parades. After all, anyone can go to a supercar parade in their home country, but a supercar POLICE parade? Well get in line for a visa my friend. Perhaps building an economy via tourism is the actual nation’s service they’re talking about haha. But hey! on the flip side, get ready for some cool Instagram police car music videos from Turkish car spotters real soon

Turkey is going through one of the highest inflations of the century and their economy is in a mess. Yet they have the audacity to make such a move. Shows how connected their government is with the happenings

Moreover, where do they plan to drive this, in EU part or the Asia part.

Re: Turkey Police add Ferrari, Porsche & other supercars to their fleet for free

Like others have pointed out, the most logical step would have been to auction them off. But well, I don't blame them cops for wanting their hands on these exotic cars.

From what I gathered, Istanbul Police were not really skimpy in the past either. I have seen BMW Motorrads (probably R1200?) in their force almost a decade ago. I cannot exactly recollect the models, but they also had some nice unmarked cars.

Re: Turkey Police add Ferrari, Porsche & other supercars to their fleet for free

Not the best decision by the government as pointed out by others but instead of letting them rot like in India’s police stations, it’s better that they are putting them to use till the time they can maintain it. Even if they are auctioned, isn’t there a possibility that cars would be bought by someone from that mafia group again. And I believe maintaining those cars would be still cheaper than buying a new fleet.

E.g. maintaining a luxury car would still be cheaper than buying a new Innova.

Frankly none of these cars will ever be on cruise/patrol duty.

Not sure about Turkey but the Police forces don't really take any car from the showroom, add decals and onboard to duty. They need to be certified and then kitted out.
Periodic Servicing the Bentley in itself could buy a few regular Patrol cars.

The famous Super Police cars of Dubai are mostly a publicity although UAE bought these cars and Turkey found a shortcut.

It really has that "let them eat cake" vibes when governments do this.

Re: Turkey Police add Ferrari, Porsche & other supercars to their fleet for free

This reads 1 month "after arrested". Would be funny if his cars are utilised even before he is convicted or his right to appeal has not been extinguished. In such a case, after being acquitted, he will have to sue the government for misusing this assets!

On a serious note, they much rather auction the car.

As far as cars lying in yards in India - they always auction it. But in India, we follow the due process of law - which would also mean that you should not create right over assets, till the legal remedy of the accused has been expired! It's unfortunate that it takes so long for judiciary in our country to come to a decision, in the mean time a lot of these assets lose its value.
