Consumer Report Study: Chrysler Pacifica rated as the least reliable car, along with Volvo & Rivian

A new study conducted by Consumer Reports has revealed the 10 least reliable vehicles of 2023.

The study pulled together data of more than 3,30,000 vehicles to work out which of them are the least reliable. The study identified 20 potential trouble areas, which included everything from squeaky brakes to engine meltdowns and/or EV charging problems.

As per the study, vehicles from the Stellantis-owned brands didn't fare well, occupying 4 of the 10 slots, including the top slot with the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid. The Pacifica managed to score just 14/100 points. The Volkswagen Taos came second, followed closely by the Ford F-150 Hybrid with 18/100 and 19/100 points, respectively.

The Volvo XC60 (21/100) and the Rivian R1T (22/100) completed the top 5. The other Stellantis models in the list included the Jeep Grand Cherokee L in sixth with 23/100 points, the Jeep Grand Cherokee in ninth with 26/100 points and the Jeep Wrangler in tenth with 27/100 points. The remaining slots were filled by the Nissan Frontier in seventh and Volkswagen Jetta in eighth with 23/100 and 25/100 points, respectively.

I see Stellantis has a poor record here, most probably the Japanese nameplates (especially Toyota) would come out on top in terms of reliability.

Yes, Lexus, Toyota and Honda. However, I must say that I'm a little surprised that the XC60 is there. Volvos are supposed to be among the more reliable Europeans.

The most important point out of this is the Ford 150 Hybrid. With all the hue and cry about F150 lightning and its reducing production or Ford ramping down on its EV investment due to bad market sentiment.

Their Hybrid F150 scores 3rd worst on the reliability charts says a lot about Ford and its current state. If they cannot make 25 years old technology reliable enough, it will be really tough for them to just implement a 10 year old technology.

I don't see Jeep Compass in the list? I believe the original Jeep Compass was launched in 2006 in USA? Does it mean it was more reliable? So is it fair to conclude that Jeep as a brand is painted as a non reliable company here, where as it is supposed to be few models made by Jeep are not reliable?

It would have helped if they also listed the powertrains, trim levels and year of model year. Some of the petrol models offered abroad that were both supercharged and turbocharged had issues.

Tesla Model 3 ranks the least reliable in TUV reliability tests:

- Tesla EVs were the least expensive cars to run over a 10-year period.
- The electric sedan frequently suffered problems with its lights, brakes and suspension
- Tesla’s Model 3 ranked last in a German reliability study of newer cars for the second year.
- The report found a high frequency of problems with the lights, brakes and suspension.
- Honda’s Jazz subcompact and the Porsche 911 were praised for their lack of faults.

The TÜV test is a compulsory roadworthiness assessment – officially called the Hauptuntersuchung – that all cars being used on German roads must undergo every 24 months once they reach three years old. Inspectors check the condition and operation of everything from the chassis structure to the brakes, steering, suspension, lights and a huge list of other items.
Quote:
It’s a tough test and one out of every five cars fails. Tesla’s Model 3 racked up more failures than any other car in the 2–3 and 4–5-year segments, primarily due to problems with its lights, brakes and suspension.
Quote:
The TÜV notes that the last two are often a problem with EVs due to their weight compared with equivalent combustion-powered cars and the fact that much of the braking force is generated through energy recuperation, meaning the brakes don’t get enough of a workout to keep them in good order.

CR’s Top 10 Vehicles for 2025 see Japanese brands dominate.

Each Top Pick had a high overall score, which factors in road tests as well as reliability and owner satisfaction ratings. Top Picks also had to perform well in crash tests, and each comes standard with automatic emergency braking. In essence, these models are supposed to be safe, reliable, and good to drive.
