A visit to the Petersen Automotive Museum, Los Angeles

I'm finally getting off my butt and uploading more of the pics from my recent roadtrip. This was actually on the 2nd day of the trip. We stopped off at the Petersen Automotive Museum in LA. Great place to visit. I'll let the pics do the talking. This will be a multipage thread since I did take a bunch of pics!

Bunch of Porsche's as the opening exhibit. They have a rotating exhibit for the entrance. This time was Porsche's

The gold plated 1980 Delorean. Not a fan. I guess this was a special offering with American Express. American Express planned to sell 100 of these to their Gold Card Members for $85,000. Sizeable amount of money today, and insane amount of money in 1980. Only 2 were sold, so obviously crazy rare

I was trying to be funny and asked one of the employees which dictator owned this car. As it turns out....It was Saddam Husseins. It had a very interesting history. The guide said it was basically driven out of Iraq by unknown person/persons to Jordan and abandoned at a Mercedes dealership during the war. The dealership didn't know what to do with it, not to mention the weird legality of it. They tried to give it back to the new Iraqi government after the war, but the government there didn't want anything to do with it. So after a lot of bureaucratic wrangling, the Petersen Museum was able to acquire it. Pretty cool story

Re: A visit to the Petersen Automotive Museum, Los Angeles

But wait, there's more...

This car was actually made by Dupont. Looked incredibly fast
A visit to the Petersen Automotive Museum, Los Angeles-20231014_150939.jpg

We were wandering around and things suddenly looked strange. We realized we had wandered into the electric car section. Since neither myself nor any of my car friends can stand electric cars (no offense to anyone who owns/likes them) and we started gagging, we pretty much walked right out. Which is why my only pic from that section is blurry. This section looked like it had a lot of detail with suspended frames, electric motors, cutaways etc. I'd say if someone is interested in electric cars, it'd be a great and educational place to visit (not me)

And the final batch..

This was the centerpiece of the Museum collection. All one of one works of art.

The most incredible and beautiful car I've ever laid eyes on. it was the centerpiece of this exhibit, and I can see why. I can't even begin to describe how imposing and beautifully designed this car was. It was huge even by modern bloated car standards. Looked like a locomotive bearing down on you. One of one coachbuild Rolls Royce Phantom 1. Can't even begin to imagine what it would have cost for the museum to obtain this

This was quite possibly one of the best highlights of the tour. Didn't know she was here until we walked up to this section. One of only 2 surviving actual cars used for the movie. This one was completely destroyed, but the current owner purchased her from the junkyard and rebuilt her. She came back just like in the movie. And trust me, this car looked quite sinister.

My purchase from the very fun Museum souvenir store. Alaska doesn't have a front license plate requirement, so you can put anything you want on the front. However, a cop buddy of mine recommended against this one on my 1988 Trans-Am. He said it looked way too real, and I'd probably get pulled over since the front and rear plates obviously wouldn't match. Pity. Guess I can put it on when I'm stationary next time we're having a car meet

Thanks a lot. Lovely thread and a great motivator for me to go visiting. That 4 door Custom 911 Porsche must have been like a pre cursor to the Panamera of today. The other pieces of automobile history portrayed in your pictures are a real pleasure to see and study.

Spectacular thread. Dash of everything, truly a feast for the yes and a proper brain-food. The KITT is, was and the DeLorean will always stand the test of time and be etched in an enthusiast and fan's soul forever. The KITT was simply a spectacular one, and it still gives me goosebumps to see that that in fruition.

Cheers!
