Porsche Museum

The Porsche Museum is an automobile museum in the Zuffenhausen district of Stuttgart, Germany on the site of carmaker Porsche.

History
The original Porsche museum opened in 1976 in a side-road near the Porsche factory. It was a relatively small works museum with little parking space and it was only big enough to hold around 20 exhibits (in rotation).
Porsche built the museum as a kind of "rolling museum" with rotating exhibits from a stock of 300 restored cars, many in pristine condition and still in full driving order. Originally there was discussion that the new museum would be built alongside a new Mercedes-Benz museum on former trade fair grounds in the Killesberg area of Stuttgart. After the new Mercedes-Benz Museum opened in the east of Stuttgart in 2006, Porsche went ahead with plans to upgrade and extend its museum in the northern district of Zuffenhausen next to the company headquarters. Originally costs were set at 60 million euros but days before the official opening ceremony on 29 January 2009, it was confirmed that the actual costs hit 100 million euros.

The new museum
The new Porsche museum stands on a conspicuous junction just outside Porsche Headquarters in Zuffenhausen. The display area covers 5600 square metres featuring over 80 exhibits, many rare cars and a variety of historical models.

Nissan Heritage Collection

The Nissan Heritage Collection is a private car gallery located in the Nissan engine manufacturing plant in Zama, Kanagawa, Japan.

History
The Zama facility, where the collection is housed, used to be Nissan's most advanced assembly facility when it opened in the 1960s. It was previously housed in Nissan's Oppama and was also known as the Nissan DNA Museum. Up until 2013–2014, the collection was entirely private, with no public access whatsoever. By 2018, it had welcomed a total of 15.000 visitors.
The museum focuses on restoration and safekeeping of Datsun, Prince and Nissan cars, and is curated by former Nissan career employees. The facility houses more than 450 cars dating as far back as the 1930s. 70% of the cars in the collection are in drivable condition.300 cars are on permanent display. The exhibition is curated by David Bishop, Senior Manager at Nissan. Visits to the facility are limited. Visitors must register for a visit online and wait for an approval. Visits last about 80 minutes. On weekdays, the engine of some cars are turned on for visitors to enjoy the revving acoustics of the motors.
This facility works closely with the Nissan Headquarters Gallery, located in Minato Mirai 21 district, Yokohama, and some cars from the collection are displayed in the gallery on periodical rotation.
There is also a Nissan Heritage Collection in the basement of the Lane Motor Museum in Nashville, Tennessee,USA.

Mercedes-Benz Museum

The Mercedes-Benz Museum is an automobile museum in Stuttgart, Germany. The Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart celebrates the automobile invented by Carl Benz in 1886: it relates its history and tells its stories, bringing both alive by placing them in the context of technology, day-to-day life, social history and popular culture. More than 160 vehicles of all types are the main protagonists. They range from some of the oldest automobiles ever built to legendary racing cars and futuristic research vehicles.
The current building, which stands directly outside the main gate of the Daimler factory in Stuttgart, was designed by UN Studio. The museum provides visitors with free audio tours in a variety of languages. In 2007, the museum was visited by 860,000 people.

Museums & Factory Tours every petrolhead must go to-mer-front.jpg

Visitors are also offered the opportunity to take a tour of the nearby Untertürkheim engine factory. The factory produces many of the company's diesel engines
Together with other exhibits, they form the centrepiece of the permanent exhibition covering a total of 16,500 square metres in twelve rooms. This unparalleled world can be discovered on two tours that follow a “Legend” and “Collection” narrative.
On nine levels and covering a floor space of 16,500 m², the museum presents breathtaking vehicles and over 1,500 exhibits. Discover the automotive and contemporary history from the very first patented car in the world to the hydrogen vehicle from this millennium.

  2. Commercial vehicles
The brand Mercedes-Benz is synonymous not only with passenger cars and Silver Arrows but also with commercial vehicles. In 1895, Carl Benz presented his bus, the first in the world with an internal combustion engine, which then went into service along the Siegen – Netphen – Deuz route in March of the same year. In 1896, Benz developed the delivery van, then called “Delivery vehicle” or “Business vehicle” whereas Gottlieb Daimler in Stuttgart had built his first truck in 1898.
“Commercial vehicles – those are the honest hard-working workers which, every day and throughout the world, prove their usefulness on and off the roads. And, are they thanked for their hard work? That is why we decided to honour these ‘everyday heroes’ with a tour dedicated to them, their history and development. It is an exciting tour from the start, when development was focused on use, to the present day where comfort is becoming more important. One thing will always remain the same: Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles are reliable companions for every day.”

  3. Motorsports
“Motorsports are our favourite subject. We find the Silver Arrows particularly fascinating. The guided tour starts with the first competitive motorcar race in history, from Paris to Rouen, in 1894. But it is also about the development of the first modern motorcar and, as a result, also about the first Mercedes racing car. Other highlights are the supercharged cars of the 1920s, the creation of the Silver Arrows in 1934, the legendary 300 SL ‘Gullwing’ as well as DTM and Formula 1 – and the races contested with Mercedes-Benz vehicles, such as Mille Miglia, Targa Florio and Carrera Panamericana.”

A special guided tour by our museum guides, trained in the subject matter by architects, will enable you to become acquainted with this building in full detail. A milestone in modern architecture that allows unprecedented perspectives. Find out how specially developed digital technologies made this masterpiece of glass, concrete and steel possible in the first place. Absorb the magical effect of a building that has no equal anywhere. After the tour, you are welcome to explore the museum by yourself. Areas covered: the museum itself and, if accessible, the lounge, casino, roof terrace and twists.

  6. Guided tour for small children
The car has been around a long time. At the Mercedes-Benz Museum, we will go on a journey of discovery – after a brief fairy ring and a little exercise – together with our soft toy bear, “Bärli”. Bärli knows all the vehicles in the museum and, during the tour, we are sure to get to know his favourite vehicles, for example a beautiful fire engine, a large bus or a car with doors like a gull’s wings. He will also bring along a real Mercedes star to touch. Among other things, we will look at pictures where Bärli did some silly things in the museum and explain to him what is allowed in the museum and what is not. He’s looking forward to meeting you!

Re: Museums & Factory Tour every petrolhead must go to.

Honda Collection Hall

The Honda Collection Hall is a transport museum housing a collection of Honda consumer- and racing-oriented artifacts. It is on the grounds of the Twin Ring Motegi race track located at Motegi, Tochigi, Japan. It opened in 1998. It is operated by Honda's subsidiary, Honda Mobilityland. The virtual tour recreates a physical tour of the museum, allowing us to imagine that we had really travelled to the home of Honda to relive the company's 70-year history through its most iconic products. Without moving from the sofa or desk, we can explore the museum's three floors and see an extensive selection of vehicles that were true milestones for Honda.
The second floor houses the car, motorcycle and power product sections, where the first ‘compact sports’ model from 1963, the S500 is the star of the show. As well as some of the brand's legendary models such as the Prelude, the NSX and the Civic, the exhibition also offers an overview of the evolution of the Japanese car sector, with special attention given to micro cars or Japanese kei cars, hugely successful in the Japanese market. Also on display are some of the manufacturer's earliest models, such as the Honda N360, the first mass-production micro car, which went on sale in 1967. Iconic two-wheelers on display include the CB750 – the world’s first mass-produced four-cylinder motorcycle – and the oval-pistoned NR.
The third floor is dedicated to the racing side of Honda and we can see the single-seaters, GTs and motorcycles that Honda has raced in competitions, and still races today. In this section, there are some particularly iconic pieces, like one of the McLaren-Hondas raced by Brazilian driver Ayrton Senna, and the six-cylinder RC166 ridden to Isle of Man TT victories by Mike Hailwood.

All items in the collection are maintained in running order; the museum posts times when visitors can see the display models started. The museum contains approximately 350 automobiles, motorcycles and power products. This is a sampling of items that press reports found particularly noteworthy.

BMW

The BMW Museum is the corporate museum of BMW history and was established in 1973, shortly after the 1972 Summer Olympics opened. From 2004 to 2008, it was renovated in connection with the construction of the BMW Welt, directly opposite. The museum reopened on 21 June 2008. At the moment the exhibition space is 5,000 square meters for the presentation of about 120 exhibits.

Museo Ferrari Maranello and Museo Casa Enzo Ferrari

Museo Ferrari Maranello
Museo Ferrari (previously known as Galleria Ferrari) is a Ferrari company museum dedicated to the Ferrari sports car marque. The museum is not purely for cars; there are also trophies, photographs and other historical objects relating to the Italian motor racing industry. In addition to that, the exhibition introduces technological innovations, some of which had made the transition from racing cars to road cars.

Museums & Factory Tours every petrolhead must go to-museoferrari.jpg

It is located just 300 m (980 ft) from the Ferrari factory in Ferrari's hometown of Maranello, near Modena, Italy. The museum first opened in February 1990,[1] with a new wing being added in October 2004. Ferrari itself has run the museum since 1995. The total surface area is now 2,500 square meters. The number of annual visitors to the museum is around 180,000. The exhibits are mostly a combination of Ferrari road and track cars.

Museo Lamborghini and Museo Ferruccio Lamborghini

Museo Lamborghini
The Museo Lamborghini (or Lamborghini Museum) is an automobile museum owned and operated by Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. in Sant'Agata Bolognese, Emilia-Romagna, Italy. The two-storey museum opened in 2001, and was renovated in June 2016 to provide exhibit space for more models. The goal of the museum is to cover all major milestones in the Lamborghini's history. For this purpose, the museum displays a family tree that shows all the models ever produced by the company. The current gallery contains supercars such as the 350 GT and the Sesto Elemento, and one-off and concept cars such as the Veneno and the Miura concept.

Museo Ferruccio Lamborghini
Museo Ferruccio Lamborghini is an Italian museum in Argelato, a few kilometres from the centre of Bologna, Emilia-Romagna, focused on the life and work of Ferruccio Lamborghini, the founder of the Lamborghini sports car marque. The Ferruccio Lamborghini Museum narrates the life of Ferruccio through his mechanical creations and a vast archive of family’s photos. This place, conceived and founded by the entrepreneur Tonino Lamborghini to celebrate his father, was inaugurated in 2014.
Inside 9,000 sqm. the Museum holds all the industrial productions of the Doctor of Engineering (Hon. Causa) Lamborghini, from the first Carioca tractor which started his company in 1947, to the most important tractors of the ‘50s,’60s and ‘70s. An emotional journey will let you admire Ferruccio’s personal cars collection, like the fabulous Miura SV, and many other famous cars, like the Fiat Barchetta Sport, modified to participate in the 1948 Mille Miglia competition, the futuristic Countach, Jarama models, Urracos and the Espada with seagull wing doors that inspired the car of the Back to the Future movie.
The Museum will also offer you a glimpse of two special stories: the helicopter prototype and the 11-times world champion Fast 45 Diablo Class 1 offshore boat, 13.5 meters long with Lamborghini engines.

Museo Horacio Pagani & The Mille Miglia Museum

Museo Horacio Pagani

The PAGANI MUSEUM was founded in San Cesario sul Panaro, near Modena, by the Italo-Argentinian Horacio Pagani, a close friend of the Argentinian legend Juan Manuel Fangio. The visit is a journey along the most important moments that marked Horacio path, from the first significant years in Argentina until today, and explores in depth the conditions that led a young boy who strongly believed in his ideals, pursuing them with passion and dedication, until the realization of his greatest dream: “come to Modena to design and build my own cars”

Museums & Factory Tours every petrolhead must go to-museohoraciopagani1.jpg

Everything in the Museum highlights the philosophy of Horatio Pagani, who sees art and science walking together hand in hand. A philosophy that took inspiration from a concept of Leonardo Da Vinci and that today represents the soul of Pagani Automobili, where the unique craftmanship skills are tangible in every process and creation.

The Mille Miglia Museum
The Museum is dedicated to the ‘Red Arrow’ race and was brought to life by the Mille Miglia Museum Association. It was established in December 1996 by a group of Brescian businessmen known as the “Friends of the Mille Miglia”. The Association today has 50 shareholders.

The new Museum was opened to the public on 10 November 2004. Setting up this project involved restoring the Sant’Eufemia monastery complex, owned by the Brescia municipality. The property is of huge archaeological, historical and architectural value and had for some time been undergoing relentless degradation.

The Museum stands out from other automobile museums precisely because of its location at this hugely important historic site. The Mille Miglia Museum is the guardian of history there, telling its legendary story and providing living testament, day after day, to that period of the region’s past.

The Museum is not intended to be a simple archive. Instead, it aims to reconstruct this famous cultural sporting event, within the context of Italy’s vast history. The Mille Miglia Museum has been able to establish a collection of rare, four-wheeled gems, which it exhibits in its museum. This is all thanks to the devotion of private collectors and partnerships with other automobile museums, including a Cooperation Agreement the Mille Miglia has signed with the Mercedes-Benz Museum. The cars loaned to the Mille Miglia are arranged in the Museum before sets and backdrops that recall for visitors the various periods in which the race was alive.

Thanks for the compilation. Its good to have everything in one place. I request you to research some more and add to the info on this thread so as to try and make it the definitive car museum reference thread. Apart from the ones listed here there are a number of other top quality car Museums in America and EU, Australia and South
Africa and all. For example; Volvo Museum Gothenburg, Sweden. (Went there years ago but seem to have mislaid all the photos). Petersen Museum, USA, Beaulieu, England, VW/ Audi, Wolfsburg. And so on.

Thanks for the excellent information and photos. British motor museum at gaydon, UK is also quite nice and has wide variety of cars.

Re: Museums & Factory Tours every petrolhead must go to

Thanks for this compilation. I had the privilege of visiting the Mercedes Museum in Stuttgart last year, and it was truly an unforgettable experience for any true petrol head. The history and innovation on display were nothing short of extraordinary.

Earlier this year, I also had the chance to explore the Alfa Romeo Museum on the outskirts of Milan. Of course, it's quite a different experience compared to the grandeur of Mercedes, but it was still fascinating to delve deeper into the world of Alfa Romeo.

I've attached some pictures from my visit, although I apologize for the quality – they don't do justice to the incredible cars on display. 📸
