Hilux Champ could be Toyota's IMV 0-based affordable pickup

Last month, Toyota showcased the IMV 0 concept at the Tokyo Motor Show. It is said to spawn an affordable pickup, which according to the latest reports, could be called ‘Hilux Champ’.

Reports suggest that the Hilux Champ would be the first IMV 0-based model. It is likely to be launched in Thailand by 2025.

Unlike the standard Hilux, the IMV 0-based offering could be more utilitarian. It is likely to come in multiple body styles designed for different applications.

While mechanical details of the Hilux Champ are not known, reports suggest that it could use a 2.4-litre diesel engine from the Innova Crysta paired with an automatic transmission. Toyota might offer the Hilux Champ in 2WD and 4WD configurations. A strong hybrid powertrain could also be on the cards.

Re: Hilux Champ could be Toyota's IMV 0-based affordable pickup

I think this truck has a solid chance to take over the Indian LCV market if it is priced anywhere below ₹20 Lakh. Toyota's claim of it being focused on "developing markets" is what keeps my hopes up about it being likely to be Imdia bound. Selling these in the sub 20 Lakh price range can ensure a good demand both as a reliable alternative to the Tata Xenon Yodha/Mahindra Bolero Pickup in the commercial space and a bestseller in the lifestyle vehicle segment against the Thar/Jimny in 4×4 guise

Re: Hilux Champ could be Toyota's IMV 0-based affordable pickup

Toyota IMV 0 expected launch in Thailand by 2025 – 2.0L petrol, 2.4L diesel.

First drive report:

Toyota's $10,000 Pickup Truck Is Perfect
Hilux Champ could be Toyota's IMV 0-based affordable pickup-screenshot-20231116-123505.png

Quote:
The Toyota IMV 0 intends to fill in that low-cost space beneath the Hilux with a target starting price of $10,000. It made its debut at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show, wearing cool Land Cruiser 70 Series style. Shortly after the Tokyo show, we took one for a spin.
Quote:
Toyota has rethought every inch if this truck with an eye toward cost optimization and delivering everything that's absolutely necessary and nothing that's not. The development team even invited upfitters from around the globe to weigh in on how to better optimize the chassis and cab for to prepare them for aftermarket builds.
Quote:
Exact powertrain specs have not been disclosed, but we presume our example was fitted with the Hilux's entry 2.0-liter 139-hp four-cylinder gas engine and a five-speed manual transmission. ( guessing the diesel will be the 2.4-liter 150-hp Hilux unit, but several engines are likely to be offered.)
Quote:
Although it had airbags and ABS, this simplified truck felt way lighter than its size suggested, so it gathered speed faster than expected. Its long shifter's motion recollected full-size Yank truck of yore, though its respectable precision did not. The bluff flat-glass windshield generates some wind noise at highway speeds, but engine and road noise generated by the Bridgestone Duravis R611 commercial vehicle tires (215/65R16 for plenty of sidewall) keeps your ears from fixating on it.

had no real chance to throw the IMV 0 around any curves, but then what potential customer will? Braking felt firm and confidently able to whoa a lot more mass. But in today's world of $50,000 median-price new vehicles in the U.S., it was incredibly refreshing to drive such a basic, no-frills, transportation device. Driving this truck, you're instantly aware of how it will enable people in other corners of the world to do the hard work necessary to make a living, build a community, help others, etc. In that way it's a very different type of "lifestyle vehicle" than we're accustomed to
It is slated for delivery to ASEAN markets starting in 2025, with pricing in markets that tolerate deletion of airbags and ABS at the 2023 equivalent of $10,000. In tighter-regulated markets, expect to pay as much as $5,000 less than today's mainstream Hilux.

The Hilux Champ has been unveiled, to go on sale in Thailand first followed by other markets.

In production form, the Hilux Champ gets three powertrain choices. First is the 2.4-litre diesel good for 150hp and mated to either a 5-speed manual (350Nm torque) or a 6-speed automatic (400Nm torque). It also gets two naturally aspirated 4-cylinder petrol engine options – a 2.0-litre unit good for 130hp and 183Nm, and a 2.7-litre unit that delivers 166hp and 245Nm of torque. Both these engines also get a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic gearbox as options. Additionally, there are talks of a strong hybrid petrol option also making its way in some markets.

As far as wheelbase options are concerned, the Hilux Champ SWB is 4.9 metres long, 1.8 metres wide and 1.8 metres tall. It has a 2,750mm wheelbase, which is identical to the Toyota Innova Crysta. Meanwhile, the Hilux Champ LWB is 5.3 metres long, has a 3,085mm wheelbase, and is identical in width and height to the SWB version. Both versions get a 180mm ground clearance.

A cute, no nonsense truck. Would be interesting if they launched an SUV version of this or one with a more premium looking rear end for private customers. I believe the 150hp diesel could make this an attractive alternative to prospective Jimny or Thar owners if not priced too high.

Re: Hilux Champ could be Toyota's IMV 0-based affordable pickup

It would definitely be interesting to see its acceptance and sales, when (and if) it is released in India. However, I am optimistic, as I see a number of applications these days which demand quality and reliability rather than (just) lower cost. Examples include e-commerce, parcel deliveries, cold-chain distribution, white-goods distribution, "light" packers and movers etc.

Will these be cheaper than a Tata Ace? Of course not. However, anybody buying this vehicle would probably be investing in a 500,000 Km run - and would come from a different point of view.

As I said, it would be interesting to wait and watch. Best of luck to Toyota India.

Re: Hilux Champ could be Toyota's IMV 0-based affordable pickup

With the launch of the new stunning looking Land Cruiser for the UK, I was wondering what they would be offering up for the 'poor' countries, and whether they would go back to their "Let's see how many of these we can sell after we make it look as ugly and cheap as possible" strategy that they have been following. And Toyota does not disappoint. As always, the appealing stuff is for the 'Properly Civilized" nations, and the 3rd world gets this 3rd rate design.

Worst of it is that there will be hard core Toyota fans who justify the design and lap it up...

No big Toyota fan myself but IMO this basic truck formula is appealing for a work/farm vehicle. Especially at those Thai prices!

When I see the comments on the web articles about the Hilux Champ I see many commenters from countries like the US, Australia wishing they were able to get the Champ locally
