| Japan's Car Culture, Meets, Tuners, Drift Festival & More I love Japan, JDM cars, Japanese culture and Japanese people, so join me on this thread to find out about Japan's car culture and what it's really like in "The Land Of Rising Sun". Shaken (Vehicle Inspection) Famous car meet locations
Car Parts UP Garage Drift Festival Touge Drifting Vending Machines and Convenience Store Shaken (Vehicle Inspection)Shaken is the name of the vehicle inspection program in Japan for motor vehicles over 250 cc in engine displacement. The inspection system is in place to ensure that vehicles on Japanese roads are properly maintained and are safe to be on the road. Vehicles that cannot pass inspection are not permitted on public roads. As vehicles get older, maintaining them to the required standards can become expensive and stringent shaken rules (to name few, Vehicle should have the specified ground clearance, both headlight level should be equal, stock exhaust, vehicle tyres shouldn't protrude) that makes it hard to pass the test that's why Japanese get rid of their car faster rather than using the same for a long time. Another reason is to determine if a vehicle has been illegally modified. The vehicle has to be in OEM specification to pass the test but there is a loophole, after getting shaken enthusiasts again modify their car and when inspection time comes near, they have to undo all the mods they have done to their vehicle just to pass the test. Different inspection time period is specified for different vehicle. Famous car meet locationsDaikoku PA (Parking Area) - Most famous of them is Daikoku PA. If you love JDM cars you obviously know about this PA. Daikoku Parking Area is a rest area located on the Daikoku Route of the Shuto Expressway in Tsurumi-ku, Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture. As the name suggests it is for the drivers who are driving on the highways for long time to stop and take a rest and it is also used to park cars which are to be exported/ imported from the country but The history of Daikoku is closely tied to the infamous Wangan loop that was a popular venue for street racing, which was especially rampant in Japan during the '90s. All those racers needed a place to meet up or rest after their runs and Daikoku was the perfect spot. First meets were usually attended by street racers and would often be interrupted by the police. Times have since changed, and the bad boys of Japanese streets were mostly tamed, but Daikoku PA remained a popular meeting place for all kinds of petrolheads. Due to the large parking space, it is often used as a meeting place for private cars, and on holidays there are cases where the parking lot is full even though there are few people in the facility. For this reason, a banner is displayed in the area to call for refraining from parking for a long time, which is not the original purpose of resting. The atmosphere these days is a lot more casual than before as the parking area has become a place for car enthusiasts from all over Japan to calmly park and show off their vehicles. It's lively at Daikoku almost every day, but it's most crowded on the weekends when the entire parking lot is jam-packed with cars. Tatsumi Parking Area There are two Tatsumi PA Tatsumi Ist PA The Tatsumi No. 1 Parking Area is a rest area that is located on the Fukagawa Route of the Shuto Expressway in Tatsumi, Kōtō, Tokyo. It is a place where car enthusiasts gather because it is a large parking area for the Shuto Expressway in the 23 wards, and the night view of skyscrapers and the pictures of their cars "shine" but due to complaints (noise coming from cars running on the highway and from car meets) by people nearby authorities have installed fences which somewhat declined the popularity of this PA but still car meets take place here. Tatsumi 2nd PA The Tatsumi No. 2 Parking Area is a rest area that is located on the Fukagawa Route of the Shuto Expressway in Tatsumi, Kōtō, Tokyo. This PA is similar to first PA and has same skyline views. Umihotaru PA Umihotaru PA's name means sea firefly. This huge structure has five floors of observation decks, restaurants, and shops. Umihotaru PA is the world's only toll road rest area located on the sea. It is part of the Tokyo Wan Aqua-Line Expressway, a highway toll road that runs underneath Tokyo Bay from Kisarazu in Chiba Prefecture to Kawasaki in Kanagawa Prefecture. It is getting popular due to its views and enthusiasts go there when Police kicks them out from Daikoku PA. ![]() Car GroupsBosozoku Bosozoku ( 'running-out-of-control (as of a vehicle) tribe') is a Japanese youth subculture associated with customized motorcycles. The first appearance of these types of biker gangs was in the 1950s. Bosozoku members are known for taking a Japanese road bike and adding modifications such as over-sized fairings, lifted handlebars shifted inwards, large seat backs, extravagant paint jobs, and modified mufflers. Bosozoku Cars Kaido Racers Kaido is an older Japanese term for road or street, so a Kaido Racer is literally a street racer, although not in the Fast & Furious sense. The origins come from young Japanese enthusiasts modifying their street cars to resemble the touring car racing they were watching at Fuji Speedway and the like. For the most part, kaido racer style takes its inspiration from the Super Silhouette racers of the late 1970s and early 1980s. | Re: Japan Car Culture| From Obnoxious cars to Perfection Stance Cars The term stance is most commonly associated with the stanced car subculture, a style of modifying cars which emphasizes lowering cars, typically with either coilovers or air suspension, and often adding negative camber to the wheels to achieve the "stanced" look. These car are so low to the ground that underbelly hits the road every time car goes over uneven patch of road and it would be a miracle if front bumper lasts for a week. VIP Cars VIP pronounced as Bippu (in Japanese) VIP style is modification of Japanese luxury automobiles to make them lower and wider in stance, with more aggressive wheels, suspension, and body kits. VIP Style cars are typically large, rear-wheel drive luxury sedans.VIP cars were once associated with the Yakuza however, VIP style modifications are now a subset of their own as automotive modifications. As a trend, it differentiates itself from the traditional origins of the term VIP otherwise associated with the concept of a "very important person". The majority of VIP cars are luxury sedans from Japanese automakers such as Toyota (Aristo, Celsior, Century, Crown) and Nissan (Cedric/Gloria,President), as well as sometimes Honda (Legend, Vigor/Inspire), Mitsubishi (Proudia/Dignity, Diamante), and Mazda (Sentia/929, Millenia). ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Front seat portion can be lowered so boss can stretch his legs. ![]() ![]() Back Seat has Remote, TV, AC control, Infotainment buttons, curtains control, a Phone and this list goes on and on. ![]() ![]() Picture Courtesy - Speedhunters Last edited by JDMBOI : 1st November 2023 at 20:18. |

| Re: Japan Car Culture| From Obnoxious cars to Perfection Different car daysIn Japan, March is a magical month for owners and fans of the various R32, R33, and R34 Nissan Skyline models. Just like 86 Day (8/6) for the Hachiroku and 7s Day (7/7) for the RX-7, a simple model code sees enthusiasts gather to admire, show off, and celebrate their cars on specific March dates – the R32 on 3/2, the R33 on 3/3 and the R34 on 3/4. 7's Day July 7th in Japan only means one thing to car enthusiasts: 7’s Day i.e Mazda RX7. Car enthusiasts with RX7 comes to Daikoku PA for the meet. 8's Day 8 August (8/8) is for RX-8 by Mazda but this model is not that popular. (I Couldn't find pictures of 8's Day.) R32, R33, R34 and R's meeting 02 March (3/2) is for R32, 03 March (3/3) is for R33, 04 March (3/4) and so on R33 Day in Daikoku PA R's meeting Fuji Speedway Organized by GT-R Magazine, R’s Meeting has become one of the largest gatherings of Skyline GT-Rs in Japan, mixing the best tuner demo cars with an insane amount of privately owned Rs of every generation. It’s always awesome to see new parts for the RB being unveiled like the new HKS carbon piping and airbox kit, not to mention amazing creations like the two new BBL cars. The event is officially backed by Nissan and Nismo who brought out cool stuff like the CRS R32/33/34 trio, the new Nismo R35 and even a Nismo Z. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Wheels ![]() You can buy new engine too, should you need one. ![]() Every car is aligned for a photoshoot and a lap around Fuji Speedway. ![]() ![]() 86 Day The 6th of August (8/6) is the day we celebrate this very success, the little car that wore the popular Corolla name and ever since its inception has touched the hearts of so many car guys and girls around the world. | re: Japan's Car Culture, Meets, Tuners, Drift Festival & More Legendary Tuning and parts companiesNISMO Nissan Motorsports International abbreviated as Nismo, is a division of Nissan Motorsports & Customizing focused in motorsport and performance-oriented car models for Nissan. Nismo was initially a company, Nissan Motorsports International Co., Ltd., formed in 1984 as a result of a merger of two motorsport departments, being the in-house tuning, motorsports and performance subsidiary of Nissan. It has competed in JSPC, JTCC, the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the 24 Hours of Daytona. They currently participate in Super GT and Formula E. Nismo ceased to be a company in April 2022 by being merged with sister company Autech into a new Nissan subsidiary, Nissan Motorsport & Customizing. Mine's Mine's was started by Tsuzo Niikura in 1985. It attracted attention in 1988 by being among the first Japanese companies to sell re-programmed ECU systems for popular Japanese sports cars. Today it sells many products, ranging from injectors to complete engines. Mine's currently makes software upgrades for hundreds of Japanese cars, but only makes hardware upgrades for a few select cars. Its performance upgrades include exhaust systems, engine computers, camshafts, suspension parts, brake systems, and carbon fiber body parts. Mine's is also known for its work on the Nissan Skyline GT-R, specifically the R32, R33, R34 models, as well with the Nissan GT-R R35. HKS Founded in 1973 and named after founders Hasegawa and Kitagawa as well as funded by Sigma automotive, HKS is among the world's oldest and most respected Japanese tuning brands. HKS began working out of a dairy shed at the base of MT Fuji and went on to build the world's first aftermarket turbocharger. HKS had the sole goal of providing high-performance components surpassing the OEM standards. Like most on this list, you can find HKS attacking the drift circuits and drag strips in their heavily modified vehicles, including their legendary R33 GTR, the 1,300 hp nightmare that set the 7.67-second quarter mile record at the Sendai Hi-Land speedway. This record was held for many years as the fastest AWD vehicle in the world, giving their rivals a target to beat. Spoon Spoon is just one of the many legendary tuning shops found in Japan, founded by former Honda test driver Tatsuru Ichishima in January 1988. Spoon was providing race data for Honda and Mugen. His first and most notable exploit was the Spoon Honda Civic E-AT. Draped in blue and yellow livery, this tuned spoon produced 100 hp over stock at 230 hp. Spoon was an early adopter of ECU mapping, using these chip sets in the Super GT Japan. Using his relationship with Honda, Tatsuru got his hands on many JDM icons such as the NSX, Civic EK9, S2000, and the more recent Civic FD2. Spoon still provides customers with the full Spoon service from the 'Type-One' store across the street from Spoon HQ. Top Secret Top Secret was founded by street racer Kazuhiko Nagata, or "Smokey," in 1991. Nagata famously paints his favorite tuning projects in a signature gold to identify a Top Secret product. Only his favorites get this treatment, including his 2013 1,100hp GTR. This car won the Nardo high-speed challenge, clocking in at 234.407 mph. Smokey is the main attraction to this legendary tuning brand, having been arrested in the UK for crossing 197 mph in a modified Supra. However, he changed the Supra, adding a V12 engine powering 930 hp to the rear wheels. This animal achieved a top speed of 222 mph, with Smokey manipulating the 6-speed manual transmission. Top Secret isn't your ordinary tuning brand. Nagata named them because his former employers (TRUST tuning) allowed him to work in 'secret' to build his now legendary tuning business. Midori Seibi Midori Seibi operates outside of Yokohama, Japan with complete professional service and tuning capabilities, including certification from Nissan for the R34 GTR. The workshop includes 4 wheel dyno equipment, chassis tuning capabilities and shock absorber servicing amongst others. GReddy Working via parent company Trust tuning, GReddy is the US subdivision based in California, USA. GReddy products are highly rated. The company can be seen drifting with its team. Specializing in all components, especially turbochargers and air intakes, GReddy has been making products since 1977, making them an old reliable brand... some would say "Trusted." GReddy sells the ever-popular Rocket Bunny kits for cars, starting with the Datsun 240Z. Rocket Bunny kits are now available on a new Supra GR or a Scion FRS. The company is widely known for its sub-brand of tuning parts GReddy and the turbochargers under this brand. ![]() BLITZ Founded in Tokyo, BLITZ arrived in 1981. Although beginning life working with turbo compression, they have since gone on to become one of Japan's most prolific tuning shops. One of the benefits of BLITZ is manufacturer variety. These include Subaru, Honda, Toyota, and Mitsubishi. One of their most prominent vehicles was the BLITZ R34 Skyline, tuned to 861 hp. This 1999 Skyline is capable of 0-62 mph in 3 seconds! In addition, BLITZ regularly participates in the drifting scene, marketing worldwide. Mugen Motorsports Mugen was founded by Hirotoshi Honda in 1973, the son of Honda founder Soichiro Honda. Hirotoshi could not join his father's company – a "make your own way" stunt from Soichiro. However, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Hirotoshi used his love of modifying daddies 'whips' to create Mugen, a tuning shop specializing in Honda components. Mugen ("Unlimited" in Japanese) became so good at this, they began tuning Honda's team vehicles for the GT championship, even winning the Formula 3000 in 90-91. Mugen took over from Honda between 1992-2000, supplying Formula One engines. Using Honda vehicles and race success, Mugen is now a highly respected tuning brand selling components and body kits for Honda vehicles. ![]() Garage Active Garage Active is a Skyline GTR specialist located in Fukuoka Japan founded in 1992. Garage Active continues to push GTR development with the new R32 GTR Full Carbon wide body kit. The Garage Active builds of today are on a totally different level than these earlier builds. From replacing every ounce of an exterior with house-made carbon fiber and then candy coating the woven surfaces for a richly pigmented impact, to swapping ITB setups onto RB engines and dropping sequential gearboxes in just for shits-and-giggles, Sakamoto's vision of what can be is equal parts impressive and unorthodox. Tommykaira Tommykaira is a Japanese car tuning and manufacturing company founded in 1986 and headquartered in Minami-ku, Kyoto, Japan. The company was named after its two founders, Yoshikazu Tomita and Kikuo Kaira.[2] Its parent company was founded in 1968 as Tomita Auto Inc. Several of its Tommykaira's custom cars have appeared in the Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport racing simulation video game series. ![]() Seeker Based in Tokyo, Seeker specializes in tuning Hondas. Ryo Teraoka heads up the tuning shop. Their Civic FD2 sums up everything we love about Seeker. With its Seeker Carbon Fiber rear spoiler, Seeker carbon bonnet, Seeker carbon roof, and the other signature body parts, it lures the eyes. Yashio Factory Yashio Factory was founded in 1981 by Kazuyoshi “Oka-chan” Okamura, who mainly concentrated on 180SX and Silvia models in the 90s. He built himself a good reputation for balanced cars and now works on a variety of vehicles. One of his most impressive builds is the S15 driven by Okamura in the D1 drifting series. Advance Based in Yokohama, Advance may specialize in different models, but when you take a look at what the brand does to the Honda NSX, your jaw drops as you peruse the yellow body with its signature parts. Like many of Japan's tuning shops, Advance's focus is on the total package, taking every part and making it sing. That is why Advance is one of the most legendary Japanese tuners with some of the sickest builds. Advance is not only known for its build, but also for the 'ADVANCE HSCC', or otherwise known as the high-speed circuit challenge, that takes place at the Fuji Speedway. Apexi A’PEXi was founded in Japan back in 1992. The business launched from team of Japan's top leading engineers and mechanics. They started developing and manufacturing top quality aftermarket exhaust system and upgrade products, leading to now. With talented engineers and exceeding technology, A’PEXi has made a staple in the import aftermarket industry. One of the product that has conquered and standardized is the A’PEXi N1 Muffler system. A’PEXi N1 Muffler was first of its kind to incorporate the classic angled muffler design with maximized performance that has become familiar with today’s street cars. The concept was born from A’PEXi’s involvement in the grueling N1 endurance series. The N1 is truly the benchmark in which others strive to duplicate. A’PEXi has also leaded in high performance electronic tuning parts. The Power FC was also one of first of its kind to fully swap out the ECU without backpacking off OEM ECU system. The Power FC was made for specific engine with simplified subsequent settings to tune for ideal performance. Endless In 1986, Isao Hanazato founded Endless Advance Co. Ltd.to develop brake pads based on his own racing experiences. He had found that the racing pads available in many cases had insufficient performance and suffered from many compromises hampering the serious racer. Endless’ goal in development is to create a well balanced braking system with excellent performance in its entirety. As a result of this they started in the beginning of the 90´s to develop brake discs and also brake fluid exceeding all DOT specifications. The latter years has also seen the introduction of their own 4- and 6-piston calipers which has proved themselves in the Japanese GT series. ![]() Tec-Art Tec-Art's is run by a family of mechanics with love for motorsports. | re: Japan's Car Culture, Meets, Tuners, Drift Festival & More Drift FestivalFestival in Japanese means "Matsuri" The Ebisu Circuit is a famous car racing track and drifting school in Nihonmatsu. Three times a year, it holds the Ebisu Drift Matsuri (Ebisu Drift Festival), a thrilling event that gathers car drifting fans from across Japan and abroad. The festival usually goes from Saturday morning to Sunday afternoon, during which participants can drift all day and night in the designated courses for a set fee. There are typically three Drift Festivals a year: Spring Drift Festival: Usually held in April. Summer Drift Festival: Usually held in August. Autumn Drift Festival: Usually held in November. Matsuri goers have access to all 7 tracks at Ebisu circuit during the festival, including Higashi (east) course and West (nishi) course which aren’t usually open to drifting on regular days because of that, cars run right next to each other, making the already exciting prospect of drifting even more adrenaline-packed! ![]() ![]() ![]() Best thing is you can store your car at the circuit & there is a petrol station right in front of circuit. ![]() ![]() Picture Courtesy - Checkpoint Touge DriftingTouge meaning ‘pass’ in Japanese, is a series of roads that were developed to help traverse the mountains of Japan. Because of this, long and winding roads were built, slowly ascending or descending. Originally made for commercial vehicles and commuters to navigate easier, it wouldn’t be long until the drifters of the 80s and 90s would catch on to this gold mine and start shredding up the tarmac. So, that scene in Fast & Furious: Tokyo Drift isn’t actually that unrealistic, as racers used to gather on these streets at night times to compete, cruise, and show off their skills. Togue racing on the streets is highly illegal; this doesn’t stop the petrol-heads from turning up to the mountains to glide down them though. Video’s surface online still today of the latest showdown and display of drifting, and to conquer these mountains is no small feat. The skills on display from some of these drivers are crazy, and even though we don’t condone illegal driving, we commend them for keeping the culture alive. ![]() All the drifting scene is started by the LEGEND Keiichi Tsuchiya on whom Initial D Anime is based, which initiated these Touge runs, Drifting and racing. back in 90's it was more prominent but now due to strict rules and Police patrolling this sport has taken a hit but enthusiasts still do Touge runs now and then. Japan never ceases to amaze me. ![]() Thank you for sharing the pictures and educating us about the car scene in Japan. | Re: Japan's Car Culture, Meets, Tuners, Drift Festival & More Great thread and a very interesting read. Thanks for sharing! As much as I love the Japanese car culture, I feel it is diminishing. From what I have watched online most of the citizens prefer walking or use Public Transport which is very efficient. Would like to read more about Yakuza and their cars. Thanks. |
