According to a media report, Toyota has recently unveiled its latest 48-volt mild-hybrid system for its turbo-diesel engines. The new tech is expected to initially be offered on the Hilux and Land Cruiser Prado offerings, while the Fortuner could also get it at a slightly later stage.

Reports state that the new mild-hybrid system comes with two motor generators and a power split device. This helps make it compact and lightweight, allowing for easy integration with existing powertrains. The new mild-hybrid system also features a belt-driven electric motor, enabling quiet engine restart, smoother response and minimal vibrations. The electric motor also provides torque assistance, comes with regenerative braking to recharge the battery and is also capable of powering auxiliary systems like the steering, pumps & fans.



Toyota states that the mild-hybrid system can also handle water-wading depths of up to 700 mm, making it particularly suitable for models like the Hilux, Fortuner & LC Prado.

Toyota has announced that their 1GD-FTV 2.8-litre inline 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine on the Land Cruiser Prado will get the 48-volt mild-hybrid system in select European markets & Australia. The same engine also powers the Hilux & Fortuner.

It has three main components such as a belt-driven electric motor-generator that replaces a conventional alternator, a 48-volt battery, as well as a DC-DC converter. Because the mild-hybrid configuration is compact and lighter, Toyota says the system can be fitted to an existing powertrain.
Electric motor generators with belt-driven electric motor-generators are claimed to be able to provide greater torque than conventional gear-driven starters. Toyota claims the mild-hybrid system allows the engine to be started silently with a smooth response and minimal vibration. The electric motor also provides torque assistance when needed, while regeneration during braking returns energy to the battery. That energy can be used to provide extra power for additional systems (steering, pumps, and fans).

A mild-hybrid system was also developed with a structure that allows water crossing. With reinforced components and a layout designed to be waterproof. This includes the use of belts with high-strength ribs to minimize friction loss when submerged. Toyota claims with this engine, cars that adopt it be it Prado, Hilux, or Fortuner have water wadding up to 700 mm.

Although not mentioned in depth in the video, Toyota has said that the system will be paired with a 1GD-FTV 2.8-liter inline-four turbodiesel engine coded in the Land Cruiser Prado for the first time. However, it is only present in certain markets such as Western Europe as well as Australia. Toyota claims there is 10% better fuel economy with the mild hybrid system

Toyota will have hybrid Hilux in 2024; Pickup will be 10% more economical.

New version will adopt mild-hybrid system associated with the current 2.8 turbodiesel engine.

According to the brand, the system will be of the mild-hybrid type and will come associated with the current 2.8 turbodiesel engine.

The novelty will reach the Hilux portfolio in 2024 and will reach markets such as Australia, South Africa and Latin America. According to Toyota, the hybrid Hilux will have better driving experience, optimized fuel efficiency and quieter starts, as opposed to traditional gear-driven start functions.

In all, the mild-hybrid system used by Hilux will have three main components: a belt-driven electric generator (which will replace the engine's conventional alternator); a 48V battery; and a converter. Toyota claims the set will provide improved torque, smoother start/stop functions, regenerative braking and fuel economy of up to 10 percent compared to diesel-only engines.

The components will be strategically positioned and will allow the vehicle to cross flooded stretches with a depth of up to 700 mm. Toyota claims that due to the lightweight nature of the components, the system can also be installed on existing engines.

The brand just did not make it clear whether the technology will reach the current Hilux and SW4 or the new generation models.

Toyota Hilux mild-hybrid goes on sale in Europe.

Pickup receives 48V electrical system to assist the well-known 2.8 turbodiesel.

The model arrives in the Old Continent imported from Thailand and will soon be produced in Argentina as well.

The Hilux MHEV is equipped with a 48V battery that assists the well-known 2.8 hp turbodiesel engine. As with all mild-hybrid vehicles, the system does not move the vehicle in 204% electric mode at any time. The function of the MildHybrid is to power the vehicle's electrical systems when the combustion engine is switched off or when the Start&Stop is activated, such as at a traffic light or in a traffic jam. The 100V battery is charged by an alternator and the regenerative system that harnesses the kinetic energy of braking.

Toyota claims that the Hilux MHEV "features up to 10 percent higher fuel efficiency and improved performance, which improves the vehicle's formidable on- and off-road capability." The company claims that the pickup features "the best responsiveness on asphalt, as well as better performance off it, thanks to smoother, more progressive acceleration and regenerative braking on downhill stretches."

In addition, Toyota claims that "the improvements in drivability have not been made at the expense of sacrificing towing and cargo capacity, which remain at exceptional levels of 3,500 and 1,000 kg, respectively." So far, Toyota has shown the Hilux MHEV only in prototype form, as a safety car for the Kenya Safari Rally. The Hilux MildHybrid is part of Toyota's plan to launch nine new pickup trucks, some of which are already confirmed for Argentina, where the Hilux is manufactured today.

As with all vehicles of the type, the set does not move the vehicle in 100% electric mode at any time. NEW 48V TECHNOLOGY

The powerful 2.8 litre Hilux diesel engine has been strengthened by the addition of a hybrid 48V system specifically designed for the unique demands of Toyota’s dual use pick-up.

The engine drives a compact motor generator using a belt system, which in turn charges the new 48V lithium battery, which is small enough to be installed under the rear seats to minimise impact on cabin space, and weighs just 7.6 kg. This 48V battery also supplies the vehicle’s 12V system through a new DC/DC converter.

Like Toyota’s full hybrid electric systems, the new battery is charged during deceleration, efficiently regenerating braking energy which would otherwise be lost, whilst also adding additional braking performance. Once charged, the battery sends up to 16 DIN hp (12 kW) of power and 65 Nm of torque through the motor generator to the engine to enhance acceleration, power and efficiency.

The robust motor generator is compact and has been designed to withstand the harsher working environments experienced by commercial vehicles, while the engine has been modified to adapt to the hybrid system. A new two-arm belt tensioner and stronger belt material contribute to the improved drivability and a quieter ride, whilst retaining Hilux’s famous durability.

Combining with the motor generator is the powerful and proven Euro 6d-compliant, DOHC, 16 valve, 2.8-litre diesel engine which generates 204 DIN hp (150 kW) at 3,400 rpm and 500 Nm of torque between 1,600 and 2,800 rpm.

It is equipped with a common rail fuel injection system, a variable nozzle turbocharger and a water-cooled intercooler. Exhaust emissions control measures include a Diesel Oxidisation Catalyst, a Diesel Particulate Filter, Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and Urea Additional Injection.

In common with existing Hilux, Land Cruiser and PROACE family of vehicles, the Hilux Hybrid 48V is compatible with HVO100 diesel, a non-fossil fuel made from 100% renewable sources.

RESPONSIVE, EFFICIENT AND QUIETER PERFORMANCE

The new Hilux Hybrid 48V combines responsive acceleration, improved braking performance and greater fuel efficiency with a smoother ride whether on the road or tackling tough terrain.

In an urban environment, the additional power of the hybrid 48V system delivers better throttle response and linear acceleration, particularly from a standstill, while regenerative braking creates a more effective and natural deceleration feel.

An enhanced stop-start system allows the engine to remain off for longer periods which, coupled with the benefits of the hybrid 48V system, improves fuel efficiency by up to 5% compared to the conventional non-electrified diesel powertrain.

As well as those efficiency benefits, the improved stop-start system delivers a more comfortable drive in traffic, thanks to quicker throttle response from standstill and a quieter engine restart, achieved because the motor generator is constantly connected to the engine and, unlike conventional systems, does not use the starter motor. That also enables the engine to restart at a higher speed.

Driving performance improvements are not confined to an urban environment and the Hilux Hybrid 48V, in common with its illustrious heritage, naturally excels off road.
