Commercial advertisements, now on the petrol fuel-filler gun!

Just now I took my wife’s Ford Fiesta to pick up a few things from our local DIY store.

On the way back I stopped to fill up her car. Tomorrow she needs to drive out to our eldest son, daughter in law and our first grand son Ben. My wife hates stopping for petrol. So I do it for her all the time.

However, this time I was met with a true “first”. I really don’t think I have come across anything like this before.

The fuel dispenser pistol had been equipped with a little video screen!! On this little screen they were running various short adds, whilst I was filling up!!

I mean, seriously. Somebody has figured out he/she can sell commercials during the 30 to 90 seconds it takes us to fill up our cars? OK, five minutes for the Jag and the Jeep!

I have come across all sorts of fancy screens on the main display, including touch screens and I have come across the old add there as well. But never ever have I come across the actual nozzle/pistol fitted with a screen.

Next, like Youtube, they will be offering you, at a small charge, to take away the commercials. Or at a big charge, play your favourite movie bit.

As far as I’m concerned, it is official; the world has gone truly mad!!

Jeroen

Jeroen

Screens everywhere. Bluetooth in everything

Advertisers and media are always on the lookout for captive audience and idle time to fill in. When you are driving - billboards, while waiting for trains, inside the lifts, even loo. You've nothing else to do but stare at them. Our brains are constantly stimulated

But I am sure this is not in India.

By the way is it just video or has audio as well ?

Not India, the Netherlands. It is only video, no audio.

This can not be in India, at least not for another generation. We don’t have the culture of operating the nozzle ourselves. Our petrol pumps have attendants who fill up our cars for us. Half the time, people don’t even get out of their seats to refuel.

Oh, The unusual place I have seen these LCD's installed is on the Supermarket Shopping trolley, right in between the 2 hands where you push them.

They keep on advertising offers/sales items in the mart. Seems it’s delivering the content at every possibility to the consumer.

Something like this;

We already have advertising of that sort here; it's those people loitering next to the pumps trying to sign you up for credit cards or fixing your car's bumper or selling you some holiday company membership.

Isn’t this a fire risk? Since there is a screen, there must be some electronics embedded and a power source somewhere?

Re: Commercial advertisements, now on the petrol fuel-filler gun!

Can't say I'm surprised. A lot of the pumps in the UK already have static adverts on the nozzle handles themselves, though usually advertising products related to the supplier or supermarket if it's a supermarket petrol pump. Sometimes even if there's a display screen instead of a calculator type LCD display then this too will have video adverts, though these are rare by UK standards.
Personally I'm a bit surprised, usually when filling up the standard stance for people is to turn their head and eye the meter as it's going up, and if they know they're going full tank, they usually gaze around all over. But I guess this gives a new distraction or something to catch the attention.

We do have ad place holders in places where dispensers can't be fiddled with.

Re: Commercial advertisements, now on the petrol fuel-filler gun!

Caltex fuel stations in Australia have videos with ads playing on the main bowser unit. These have audio as well, although not loud but enough to ensure you can hear it.

Having it on the bowser nozzle is a major step up.
