Bugatti confirms Chiron successor to be unveiled next year; Will ditch W16 for V8 hybrid

Bugatti has confirmed that its all-new hypercar will be unveiled sometime in 2024, with production expected to commence in 2026.

The all-new hypercar will be a successor to the Bugatti Chiron and will come powered by a V8 hybrid powertrain, ditching the brand's famed W16 engine. The new powertrain will make use of the electrical expertise of Croatian brand Rimac, which merged with the French hypercar maker back in 2021.

Bugatti's head of design, Achim Anscheidt, stated in an interview that the car's design was ready to go. He confirmed that the prototype tooling was delivered a few months ago, with the production tooling expected to be delivered in a couple of months. The Bugatti Chiron successor will be Anscheidt's final project with the hypercar brand, as he will be stepping down from the role after being with the company for 19 years.

Coming back to the car itself, the Chiron successor hypercar will continue to feature all the iconic design cues of the brand. This includes the C-shaped side bodywork and the horse-shoe grille up front. However, shifting from a W16 to a V8 hybrid will see the new Bugatti hypercar being built around a completely new chassis. Inside, the new hypercar is expected to have a familiar feel featuring an elegant design & ornate controls. One new addition though, will be a large central touchscreen infotainment display which has been absent on the Chiron and all its iterations over the years.

Reports state that the new Bugatti hypercar will be costlier than even the $5 million limited-version Mistral. Post the launch of the Chiron successor, Bugatti is also expected to turn its focus on producing EVs sometime in the future.

I don't know how to feel about this. No doubt that they are going to make a hell of a car that with insane numbers to potentially outdo the already insane competition like the recently announced Koenigsegg Gemera. My gripe is with them loosing the famed monstrously large and powerful W16 engine which is what added this magical aura surrounding the Veyron and subsequently the Chiron. Of course I understand this is done in line with the latest CAFE and emission norms and I would assume Volkswagen wouldn't want to do some electronic trickery like they did earlier with the diesels to get by this time. However, in my humble opinion what set Bugatti apart was that despite being a hypercar, it was built like a grand tourer so it was actually relatively comfortable and safe to drive. While these characteristics will mostly be maintained in the coming model, it won't be the same without the 16 cylinders working in rhythm that would make every 10 years want to keep a poster on their wall.

A Bugatti (veyron onwards) without it's 8.0L, w16, qwad turbo, qwad cam motor is not a Bugatti enough IMO. The new one might be a lot quicker, efficient and polar bear friendly but it would lack the prestige and status of it's w16 predecessors. Although, it's happening for all the prestige and boutique car makers around the world. A weird time for the automotive world and it's fans for sure.

Since it was in no way attainable, with the focus on big numbers only, the Veyron and Chiron has never smitten me. The optimistic toxic self of mine can dream of owning a Ferrari or even a Koenigsegg, but never ever dreamt or even wish to own a Bugatti.

Now with those big numbers gone, that top tier status is gone. With many other rivals vying for the same attention. Ofcourse, it will continue to have the sales in USA, Europe and GCC nations.

Woah! That is big news. Veyron and Chiron and all their derivatives were made legendary because of that W16 engine. Quad turbocharged, 10 radiators...anything and everything about this engine was a monstrosity. Sad to see it pass into the history books!
