Next-generation BMW M3 & M4 could be all-electric; Arrive in 2027 or 2028

During a recent interview, BMW M division's boss, Frank van Meel indicated that there is a possibility that the next-generation BMW M3 & M4 models could be offered as EV-only. However, he did clarify that for it to happen, it needs to be proved that the EV versions would be measurably better than the outgoing generations.

Van Meel stated that every generation of M vehicles has to succeed the performance of its predecessor. Hence, if BMW can accomplish the target performance using an electric-only powertrain, the next-gen M3 & M4 will be pure EV; otherwise, the carmaker will continue to offer an IC engine. Meel even went on to clarify that BMW has no plans of offering multiple powertrains and intends to stick to a single option.

To recollect, both current-gen BMW M3 & M4 models come powered by a 3.0-litre inline 6-cylinder twin-turbocharged petrol engine producing around 503 BHP. The cars are capable of sprinting from 0-100 km/h in under 3 seconds and have a top speed of 180 mph (290 km/h). BMW also offers an electric 4 series, in the form of the i4 - capable of a 0 - 100 km/h time of 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 204 km/h.

The next generation BMW M3 & M4 models are expected to arrive sometime in 2027 or 2028.
