EU proposes to ban chrome plating from 2024; Could it impact future car designs?

According to media reports, the EU has proposed to ban chrome plating from 2024 citing health issues associated with hexavalent chromium, which is a carcinogen - the source of chronic lung cancer. The airborne emissions during the plating process are said to be 500 times more toxic than diesel. While chemical fune depressants do reduce emissions, it contains other substances which are also highly toxic.

Considering that the chrome plating process is used in the high-volume car markets, the ban could substantially impact car designs in the future, until and unless an alternative material is identified for replacement. Chrome plating has been done on cars for many years now. The chrome finish all around gives the vehicle a more premium look.

Gilles Vidal, Renault's Chief Designer, stated, “It’s time we changed the game a little bit and opened our minds beyond chrome, there are more sustainable alternatives.”

If it means new cars get less bling-y, I'm all for it. The last decade has seen the slow, but persistent, rise of needless chrome, specially in the Euro luxo barges.

As the article itself mentions, there are plenty of eco friendly options that have the same visual effect. Nothing's going to stop the bling. It will just be created differently.

Subjective as it may be, I sincerely think the cars look LESS premium once chrome is tacked on. It's tasteful in small amounts, post which it kills the look, like in the case of the Honda City chin, for example.

Re: EU proposes to ban chrome plating from 2024; Could it impact future car designs?

It will at least eliminate all those garish designs especially of the front grilles of many cars that are no longer a treat to the eyes. Since lookalikes in the design department abound amongst many marques, the thought, concept and idea starved designers of the day had found an easier way out- design exclusive looking, garish front grilles that extend across the maximum length and width of the front facade. The headlights and fog lights are too slim in the new designs allowing the grille to proliferate across, much like encroachments on the land that spread unabated until checked.

Of course, absence of chrome in superbly designed high end cars will be missed. These subtle and eye soothing chrome designs in the ranges offered by Mercedes Benz, BMW, Rolls Royce, Bentley, Morgan and a few other such classy makes will also sadly dissappear.

And the historical vehicles as they call it in Europe (30 year plus olds) need chrome plating to be done and redone to look pristine. We are not sure how the owners of these will fend for themselves.

A way out could be sending the components for chrome plating to non EU countries in the close neighbourhood like the U.K. and friendly Eastern European countries till they too declare such a ban.

What? What will the Chinese do? Big grills with huge chrome fittings. I for one, want this in India!

Haha I would happily support this cause, not for the health-related thing that they are talking about. Just for the love towards de-chroming.

A bit of chrome is fine, just enough to highlight some bits and pieces. Not full-fledged chrome grills, a big NO-NO for me.

Lexus cars with their extroverted grille designs would look so much better from now on.

This is one auto related to ban that I agree wholeheartedly, needs immediate implementation across the globe.

The EU regulatory regime has outsized impact beyond its borders. They are a huge market with global treaties requiring equivalence in certain sectors. So it will definitely impact us.
