Toyota recently unveiled the new-generation iteration of its Vellfire & Alphard MPVs. During the global unveil though, Toyota also confirmed that they will also be introducing an all-new Century SUV to its luxury model lineup soon.

The Japanese carmaker stated that the new Century SUV will make its global debut later this year and will be positioned alongside the brand's Century sedan. The new SUV will be the second 'Century' badged model from Toyota and will be a global model, unlike the sedan which is primarily sold in Japan.



While details of the Century SUV are still scarce, it is expected to offer plenty of space inside, with a host of creature comforts and tech. Toyota states that the SUV will primarily be aimed towards chauffer-driven buyers.

Reports state that the new Toyota Century SUV will get a monocoque architecture borrowed from the Grand Highlander. It will also have a similar wheelbase but larger overall dimensions at around 5.2 m in length and 2 m in width.

The Century sedan is currently powered by a 5.0-litre V8 hybrid engine. Toyota is yet to confirm the powertrain on the upcoming SUV.

Once launched, the Toyota Century SUV could rival the likes of the Bentley Bentayga, albeit with a slightly lower price tag.

No doubt it is a capable platform, but c'mon there should be a limit for using it in the upper premium segment.

Really wonder why they have stopped using the TNGA-L platform? Except for the LS, LC, upcoming Crown sedan and Mirai, they have for all purposes abandoned the FR platform.

Looks like the rendering software gave it a third handle when mixing together the Century, Cullinan and GV80.

Though from the front angle, it gets a badge like thing instead of the third handle.

I expected better from Toyota.
While the interiors do look classy as expected, the exterior styling is a massive letdown. This now looks like a Chinese knock-off Rolls Royce Cullinan. It will certainly sell in some markets for sure. However, global sales hit? I can't see that happening.

Top-of-the-line SUV from Toyota gets two passenger door options; aimed at chauffeur-driven customers.

Unlike the Century sedan, the Century SUV will not come with a V12, instead Toyota has chosen the 3.5-liter V6 petrol engine with plug-in hybrid setup which is good for 406hp. Toyota claims the Century SUV has an all-electric range of up to 69km according to Japanese WLTC testing. When the battery is depleted it has an average hybrid fuel consumption of 7.0L/100km.

Looks good, may sell in Japan, for the rest, there is RR/Maybach/Bentley. I think the Century brand, doesnot carry enough weight to justify the price tag. At this segment price is all about brand and clearly Century is no where close to established marquee brands.

I'd go one step further and say it looks like a knockoff of a Chinese knock-off of the Cullinan designed by an ex-Kia designer.

That Front styling screams the opposite of Premium.

Yuck..

The Rear end styling is more digestable.

Maybe we'll get one with a Suzuki badge in India

The Century SUV styling looks simple and understated. I kinda like the front headlight styling, call me biased but have been a fan of those quad stacked light orientation ever since seeing them on 1980s GM pickups/SUVs. The rear lights definitely reminds of the Genesis GV80. Sure, many are calling the Century SUV as a Cullinan clone/copy etc, but when one starts to see that there is only one direction to go for an SUV version of the Century sedan, which goes back to evolutionary styling since the 1960s. It is the media that is hellbent on calling the Century as the Japanese Rolls Royce and now, the Century SUV is being called as Toyota's answer to the Cullinan. The Century has always been a Japan only model not looking to ape any other rivals. The SUV version was bound to happen in todays SUV crazed world, whether the Cullinan existed or not.

But disappointed that this is what Toyota could come up with for their flagship SUV. The Century always had its own unique powertrains and even most of the interior parts were not shared with the mainstream Toyota/Lexus models. If at all shared, it would be of the top versions of the Toyota Crown. For example the steering wheel of the Century sedan is unique, whereas the one in the Century SUV seems to be shared with the Alphard/Vellfire/Crown crossover. And it based on the TNGA-K platform. The Camry platform!!! So all in all, this happens to be a boxier chauffeur driven version of the Toyota Grand Highlander/Lexus TX. All could have been forgiven if like the new Crown crossover, it meant the prices would be lower and to cater to a wider global audience. The Crown crossover is almost half the price of the previous Crown sedan. But in this case, the Century SUV (INR 1.40crores) is priced waaayy higher than the Century sedan (INR 1.20 crores) even after sharing the powertrains of INR 50 lakh models. Maybe, assembling by hand is pushing the cost up.

At the end of the day, this is going to sell. People who use the Century will definitely fall for the high riding comfort of the Century SUV, and I am pretty sure that coupled with global appeal this will see international market sales. Pretty sure the dual tone versions will sell like hot cakes in the GCC market. The white/silver models would look at home in Riyadh or Doha.

The optional rearwards opening rear door looks more like the one in the JPN taxi than the elegant one in Rolls Royces
