Re: Toyota is developing an SUV in a segment below the Fortuner

The Mini Cruiser (Land Hopper?) which is about the size of Corolla Cross will debut in 2024.

- The headlights are round, and it looks like a reduced version of the 250 but with the spare wheel mounted on the tailgate.

- The overall width is around 1800mm, and the overall size is likely to be close to the Corolla Cross (length 4490× overall width 1825× overall height 1620mm). But the height of this Compact Cruiser will be 1850mm.

- Engines that could be installed, there are two that can be used in existing units. It is whether it is the Corolla Cross straight 4, 1.8L NA and HEV, or the RAV4 2L NA and 2.5L HEV.

- There is no detailed information on this point yet, but considering the weight of the car body, it seems that more than 2L is required. However, there is also the possibility that Toyota has been actively increasing its lineup recently, and in that case, since the 250 is a 2.4L turbo HEV (overseas specification), it may introduce a smaller 1.5L class turbo HEV.

- It is likely that the wheelbase of the GA-F platform used in the 300 and 250 will be shortened.

- it will be a rear-wheel drive-based 4WD with a secondary transmission that mounts the engine longitudinally, and the basic configuration around that will be the Land Cruiser itself. Needless to say, it is small but authentic.

- BEV of the same could appear at a later date, beyond 2026

Re: Toyota is developing an SUV in a segment below the Fortuner

Toyota’s IMV 0 platform could spawn affordable version of Fortuner.

Conceived to be a cheaper Hilux pick-up alternative with multiple customisation possibilities, this platform is also designed to get an SUV body.

- The IMV 0 may not be limited to just pick-ups and there could be an SUV body style on it just like we have the Fortuner on the current IMV platform.

- There is a strong case for a more affordable option and the IMV 0 seems the perfect platform to offer one

- It won’t necessarily be smaller, but it could have fewer features and the smaller (and cheaper) 2.4-litre diesel from the Innova instead of the Fortuner’s 2.8-litre diesel to keep costs in check.

- The IMV 0 will also get a strong hybrid option, possibly a more powerful version of the 2.0 hybrid in the Innova Hycross

- There is no EV version planned as the body-on-frame structure of the IMV 0 makes it difficult to support electrification.

- The IMV 0 pick-up will be launched in 2025 and will come to India as a cheaper alternative to the over-priced Hilux.

- There’s no official talk of the SUV variant but expect it to come a year after the pick-up.

Quite natural that the 500D (mini Fortuner) project being talked about would be a derivative of the IMV0 platform.

The pickup rumoured to be launched in India? Not sure if TKM would be ready to forego the premium image, but if they do decide to launch it in India, would be a game changer, even if it ends up costing five lakhs more than the equivalent Mahindra/TATA pickups.

The strong hybrid is an interesting news. Right now, only the full size models sold in USA has the hybrid V6 on offer. Hybrid tech has not trickled down to the smaller BoF models, yet.

Re: Toyota is developing an SUV in a segment below the Fortuner

IMV 0 (zero) platform clearly feels like one size smaller than Hilux platform-based vehicles. IMV 0's hood is barely above the person's waistline, while the Hilux's hood comes at the chest level of the person. It does not provide a towering stance I feel, it feels more like Suzuki Carry or Tata Ace size. Toyota seems to have achieved cost savings by going miniature. Still, it has potential in the Compact SUV space if customers are provided with a BOF SUV with USP being utility and power at the same time.

See the below video of IMV 0 as a safety car concept.

The workhorse versions of the Hilux, the ones that share more with Innova than Fortuner has a low ride height and won't be having the bonnet at cheat level.

It is the 4x4 high priced versions, sharing stuff with Fortuner, that has the towering stance. This is just a concept form for the IMV0 project. Pretty sure they have savings from using the old platform and decontenting than by going one size less.

Re: Toyota is developing an SUV in a segment below the Fortuner

"Land Cruiser FJ" trademarked. Could be the name of its upcoming SUV.

It looks like Toyota is turning the Land Cruiser into a family of several models.

Toyota submitted its application on October 27 in Class 12, which is reserved for "vehicles; apparatus for locomotion by land, air or water,” according to an official document published on the Japanese government's website.

Re: Toyota is developing an SUV in a segment below the Fortuner

Toyota is preparing to expand and electrify the Land Cruiser line-up over the coming years, introducing an affordable, urban-focused derivative.

Toyota is developing an SUV in a segment below the Fortuner-screenshot-20240119-171129.png

Toyota Compact Cruiser:
Previewed as a concept but looking nearly production ready, the Toyota Compact Cruiser is a squat, rugged family SUV that attempts to offer the spirit of the Land Cruiser in a smaller, more affordable guise.
Toyota said the concept was designed to “show how the ‘Cruiser’ moniker can adapt to an all-electric and ultramodern environment”, with a focus on young city buyers “who en joy active outdoor leisure interests”.
Quote:
Toyota is evaluating how to make the Land Cruiser line-up “more affordable” and “within reach of even more people around the world” as it electrifies.
Quote:
The new compact model will serve as a more style-focused, utilitarian alternative to the similarly sized Toyota bZ4X, no doubt commanding a small premium to take it into contention with more premium-oriented rivals like the upcoming ‘baby’ Land Rover Defender and Mercedes’ ‘little’ G-Class.
It was designed at Toyota’s ED2 development centre in Nice, France – notably by the same team responsible for the radically styled Toyota Aygo X and Toyota C-HR concepts.

Quote:
It is expected to ride on a variation of the E-TNGA platform that underpins the bZ4X, which produces up to 214bhp and has a 71.4kWh battery, giving a claimed 259mile maximum range. The bZ4X is available with both single- and twin-motor powertrains. However, Toyota says the concept is all-wheel drive, suggesting that arrangement will be standard, in line with the car’s rugged billing.

Isn’t this the same as the ‘Land Hopper’ which was YouTubed a couple of months ago? Here is one such video touting it as the ‘Jimny Killer’ and all that.

Tha Land Hopper was found to be a personal mobility concept in the Tokyo show.

Toyota is developing an SUV in a segment below the Fortuner-landhopper.webp.jpg

Rumours are a lot with nothing concrete from Toyota.
AFAIK, there are mainly three ones.

1. A Compact Cruiser/Mini Cruiser that is said to be based on the TNGA-F platform. Most probably an FJ cruiser successor.

2. 500D project. Based on Thailand, this would be based on the present IMV platform (maybe IMV0) and is touted to be a cheaper option to the Fortuner. The next gen Fortuner on TNGA-F will definitely go upmarket, hence this would either take place of the present Fortuner price range or go against the ScorpioN.

3. A small boxy model that would most likely be a 1.5l hybrid or electric and would end up using the Landcruiser name for sales than be a proper traditional offroader.

The Jimny killer is most likely the media work. Anything that would come would be the size of a ScorpioN. Since there aren't many alternatives globally to the Jimny, they tend to compare any small offroader with Jimny.

Re: Toyota is developing an SUV in a segment below the Fortuner

Will the Land Cruiser FJ debut in 2024?

Rendered image has the headlights are square, but there is a great possibility that a round headlight with a retro feel, such as the "70" or "250".

- A new model in the Land Cruiser family that is expected to be the return of Toyota's FJ Cruiser.

- The compact cruiser EV is a concept model designed mainly by the Toyota ED2 team of Toyota's European design division based in Nice, France.

- Cruiser FJ is its compact size, which is the youngest sibling of the Land Cruiser family.

- Built on the GA-F platform, it should be a unique presence with high rigidity and running performance.

- The body size of the watch is expected to be 4,390 mm long and 1,840 mm with a wheelbase, which is somewhere between the Yaris Cross and the Corolla Cross.

-The straight square silhouette, bold fenders, and thick rear pillar are instantly recognizable from any angle, and the catchy personality of the old FJ will be inherited.

- The ICE (internal combustion engine) model is powered by a 2.8-liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder diesel engine and a 2.7-liter inline 4-cylinder gasoline engine.

- The BEV model will be equipped with dual motors and will have a range of 500 km.

- The world premiere of the Cruiser FJ is expected to be in 2024 at the earliest.

- Its price is rumored to start at 3.6 million yen for the ICE model.

Re: Toyota is developing an SUV in a segment below the Fortuner

The name will be Land Cruiser FJ, and the platform will adopt a ladder frame as expected.

- The engine is an inline 4, 2.7L gasoline engine

- Reveal likely by Dec-24

Re: Toyota is developing an SUV in a segment below the Fortuner

Land Cruiser FJ trademarked in Australia.

Toyota is developing an SUV in a segment below the Fortuner-screenshot-20240227-162750.png

Featuring a computer-generated image of the compact 4x4 on the cover, theToyota FJ badge will make a return on the new small SUV.

- Land Cruiser FJ is expected to be officially revealed in December 2024 and will feature a 2.7-litre four-cylinder petrol engine – the same 122kW/245Nm powerplant used in the recently-launched Toyota Hilux Champ utility and entry-level Toyota HiLux utes currently sold in Australia.

- This suggests that the LandCruiser FJ will use the same Toyota iMV ladder-frame underpinnings as the Champ, albeit with a four-wheel-drive transfer case as opposed to the Champ’s rear-drive platform.
