Future BMW, MINI and Rolls Royce models could be made using 50% recycled materials

BMW Group is said to have announced a new initiative called "Car2Car", which aims to increase the number of recycled materials used in new models to 50%.

Reports state that the carmaker is trying to come up with ways to improve the quality of secondary material gathered from "end-of-life" vehicles. In order to do this, BMW is partnering with various stakeholders from the recycling industry and the scientific community. The luxury car brand has also received 6.4 million euros from the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs & Climate Action in Germany. The monetary injection will be used to explore how materials like steel, copper, aluminium, glass and plastic can be repurposed more sustainably.

The new Car2Car project will receive a total of 500 end-of-life vehicles from the BMW, MINI and Rolls Royce line-ups. These will be a mix of ICE, plug-in hybrid and fully electric vehicles. The materials gathered from these end-of-life cars will be used to check how their flow can be improved and the quality of the recycled products. Apart from recycling materials, BMW also wants to ensure that the secondary materials going on new vehicles fit their quality standards.

Reports state that the next-generation MINI Countryman will ride on wheels made from 70% recycled aluminium. Also, the interiors of the car will contain recycled elements from PET bottles and discarded carpets.
