Re: 5th-gen Toyota Prius makes its debut

The last gen model was gawdy to look at - right from Prius to Camry to Corolla - they all flaunted that wierd design language. Looks like they went back to the third gen design which was the most proportionate and neutral looking and modernized it while making it more efficient.

Love every bit of this new design (esp that sexy gold color scheme) inside out except the overdone front. I see hint of SF90 in the headlight design

How have things changed in the four years since I said this?! The latest Prius actually looks cool and the Tesla Model Y looks like an oddly shaped fish.

Gotta give credit to Toyota in trying to make the Prius more appealing.

Having said that, in the same time period, Toyota hasn't made any significant contributions in the fully electric/BEV space. They continue to make very good hyrbrid cars but seem to be dragged into the BEV space kicking and crying.

I mean, this generation of Prius should have been a fully electric sedan offering other carmakers a run for their money.

Following its global debut in November 2022, the Toyota Prius has now gone on sale in its home market of Japan. As expected, prices have increased slightly. The previous fourth generation Prius used to start at 2.59 million Yen. This fifth generation model now starts at 2.75 million Yen, up 6 percent.
Quote:
Toyota dealers in Japan have been collecting pre-orders for the fifth generation Prius since December 2022 and within one month, many dealers say the orders received were more than their entire year’s allocation.
Quote:
Buyers have been told that expect a 12 months waiting period for the 2.0-litre variant, and a minimum 6 months for the 1.8-litre variant.
Yes, demand is very high but supply is also a lot less, due to the on-going supply chain disruptions, specifically the shortage of semiconductor chips.

Across the Pacific, the 2023 Toyota Prius has also gone on sale in USA and like Japan, there is a minimum 12 months waiting period.

Toyota Prius is the car of the Year (Japan)

Quote:
The Prius, a pioneer of hybrid vehicles and a long-standing driving and driving force, has finally broken out of its shell in its fifth generation. Now that hybrid technology has become commonplace, it no longer needs to be a symbol of it, but has made its own breakthrough and moved to a new phase. The leadership team proposed to promote commoditization, but it was the enthusiasm of the development team that overturned it. We aimed not only to be a clean car, but also to be loved. The body, which until now prioritized aerodynamic performance, has been transformed into a stylish monoform. Although the Cd value is slightly inferior to the conventional type, the CdA value has been successfully suppressed to the same level as the conventional type by reducing the front projection area. On top of that, the low center of gravity and long wheelbase were achieved, and the remarkable improvement in dynamic performance was highly evaluated. The maneuverability has been transformed into the most agile and precise in the history of the Prius, and sports driving is enjoyable."

Re: 5th-gen Toyota Prius makes its debut

Surprise! Study finds the greenest car isn’t an EV –but the next four are.

For 2024 the first-place winner of the greenest car, is the Toyota Prius Prime SE.

This year’s GreenerCars rankings just came out and a vehicle with a gas-burning engine beat all the rest. Coming in second through fifth though were all-electric vehicles. Here’s a breakdown of how these rankings came about, who the big winners were, and which EV also managed to be one of the worst offenders in the scoring.

Quote:
“To calculate GreenerCars scores, ACEEE evaluates each model year 2024 car on its cost to human health from air pollution associated with vehicle manufacturing and disposal, the production and distribution of fuel or electricity, and vehicle tailpipe emissions.”
Quote:
For 2024 the first-place winner is the Toyota Prius Prime SE with a score of 71. ACEEE estimates you’d only need $529 to fuel the Prius over the course of a year. It’s the third time that it’s won and most of the victory comes down to weight. “It’s the shape of the body, the technology within it, and the overall weight,
And all different types of Priuses are very efficient.

Re: 5th-gen Toyota Prius makes its debut

Side note: I remember when the Prius was the nerdy not-sporty car people bought to fly their flag and announce to the public that they care about the environment.

Now the Prius is incredibly cool-looking.

Anyone else feel really old?
