Simple. The definition of our vehicle by law (in the RC) is that it is a 5 seater vehicle. And in India all the Tata's, Mahindras are proper 5 seaters with some exceptions. Similarly Hyundai's, MG's, Kia's are also proper 5 seaters again with some exceptions. Entry level cars in India are totally different from those of the developed world. Still Indica's, Swift's are also proper 5 seaters.
Of course some of the main reasons that many of the entry level cars are not as good as an Indica in terms of space are due the cost, priorities and brand positioning. For eg - Indica did not have all the bells and whistles that a Swift, Getz, Figo had. Indica was not a driver focussed performance oriented car compared to a Swift, Getz, Figo.
There are a lot of factors that decide the size of a car in the entry level segment. Above 10-12L, more than 90% of non-luxury vehicles are obviously 5 seaters. So the width of our existing cars are more than enough for the Indian conditions. |
