Porsche tested the 992 GT3 at 186 MPH for 3100 miles straight

Porsche claims that the 992 generation 911 GT3 can continuously do 186MPH ~(300 km/h) for 3000 miles ~(5000km) at full throttle! That's insane!!
The Porsche testing team ran a 992 GT3 prototype at Volkswagen Nardo Test Track for about 5000 km.

The test drivers accelerated the GT3 to 186 mph, maintained that speed until ran out of fuel, quickly refueled, and accelerated again. The company said that the GT3 had to perform flawlessly on this test to meet its durability standards.
Porsche’s engineering team developed a very sophisticated oil supply for the GT3’s engine. The oil supply is almost identical to the one found in Porsche’s race cars and utilizes seven suction stages.

Thats insane. This clearly denotes what this engine is made of, a masterpiece. Such a test of durability will make the buyers feel that their purchase is VFM.

The 992 GT3 has a fuel tank of 64L and is expected to have an economy of ~8 kms/liter (link). Assuming at full throttle speeds, the car gave around 5-6kmpl, a full tank would do around ~320 kms; or roughly every one hour of racing at above mentioned speeds.

Assuming filling up the tank would take around 3-4 mins atleast, the test basically meant full throttle riding for one hour + halt for about 5 mins and then back to racing again (<repeat 15 or so times>). Not bad at all!

This just strengthens the reliability aspect that Porsche carries against the italians, with its German engineering and producing models focused towards purists (GT3 Touring, 7spd Carrera) I can see why they are being sold at huge mark ups in the US and the fact that they generally hold their values really well.

It's insane how durable Porsches can be, by sports car standards. Recently read about a 911 that did 500,000 km . Porsche isn't kidding when it talks about durability, everyday-usage & reliability. Here's an apt video:

Doesn't apply to models like the Macan though :(. They are cheaper (hence not built to 911 standards) and use a lot of VW-Audi in them (including Audi engines).

Agreed! An old video by Road and Track Magazine demonstrates a 991 Turbo S being launched 50 times! Other sports cars would age horribly if they go through such abusive tests!

Wow, nice one as is usually the case with Porsche who are known to make very good commercials.

The other day my son's classmate was having his last day at the school as he was relocating and there was some sort of farewell pizza party. 911 school bus was part of the treat. Turned out to be 4.5 hrs in Bangalore peak traffic!

I think at full throttle, the FE would be max 2 to 2.5 kmpl. With the mentioned tank range and blasting off non-stop at 300 kmph; each driver would get max around 30 mins of race time before needing a pit stop.

Re: Porsche tested the 992 GT3 at 186 MPH for 3100 miles straight

I am not a Porsche fan at all. It is a brand that just doesn’t appeal to me. Neither the classic or current line up.

But I will say this for them. They do know a thing or two about engineering. From a technical point of view Porsches are hugely interesting. Extremely well thought out and build to last. This test being just one proof point!

Comes at a price. Both financially and how you are perceived. Here in the west, owning a Porsche isn’t necessarily something people appreciate.

An older example here: https://www.topgear.com/car-news/ret...12-million-kms

1.2 million km and going strong!

Many people see Porsche owners as rich gits who want to show off.

I will tell you this though; visit a Porsche dealership here and you will see a very typical kind of people working there. Everybody is in their late twenties / early thirties. All the women could be supermodels. The (sales) men all sport a stubby beard and all wear a suit, that is in my mind half a size to small.

They ooze shallowness.

Of course, most of their customers are men with too much money, usually a midlife crisis. Regardless, you would not want to live next to a Porsche owner or Porsche staff.

Most Dutch people don’t like people who flock their wealth like this. That’s why everybody appreciate our king or or pri-minister riding a bicycle.

There is a Dutch saying “do maar normaal, dat is al gek genoeg”. Which means just act normal and you look crazy enough as it is.

Never the less, very few, if any, make cars as well engineered and put together as Porsche.

Not sure if I am missing something but didn't Mahindra do the same with XUV 700 (4 of them) for 24 hours at full throttle and covered 4000 kms? I am not trying to demean Porsche in any way but is this such an incredible feat?

My aunt in Germany sold the S-Class after my uncle passed away. Attracted way too much unwanted attention. In India, supercar owners are idolized. In many parts of the West (frankly, unwarranted as everyone has a right to their choice), people spit on parked Ferraris. Many YouTube videos on this. Wealth is seen in different ways in different cities (forget countries). You'd be surprised to know how many Ferrari & Lamborghini owners get abusive gestures while driving.

Re: Porsche tested the 992 GT3 at 186 MPH for 3100 miles straight

Porsche deserve immense appreciation for this level of reliability. Saying "Not bad" is simply a massive understatement.
However, there are a few negatives to the scenario as a whole:

1. this feat will be hugely underutilised. We're entering an era where government rules simply don't allow vehicles to be used beyond a certain period. Recyclng is presented as a big saviour, whereas its just another energy hog scheme made to serve govt. interests. It won't happen without coal, electricity, etc.
Even today, using a thing till its end of life is best for environment in general & best for customer's micro economy. Companies can solve this by increasing prices instead & offering spare parts for a higher price, but they won't.

2. Toyota faced flak from governments for making such reliable cars for general public, but Porsche is likely to face no such opposition due to its not so "offroading" nature. I think its sort of unfair. With modern electronics, it should very much be possible to keep Toyotas restricted to their home zones, and stop governments from troubling companies for good products.

3. Governments around the world should unite towards a common emission standard and then, allow re-registations of vehicles for longer periods, upto 50 years, even if it comes at a reasonable premium.
This is both environment friendly and spare parts economy friendly, and will allow mankind to respect machines.
Remember, Bajaj scooters were available with a 10 year waiting period in the 1970's. But when they came, they were washed every week, cared for, serviced on time, kept shining clean, and were even a part of family photos like a family member. We respected machines.

Overall, well done Porsche. I'm a biker and know not much about cars, but you have my respect as a brand.
I would love to know people's feedback on my thoughts.
