Peugeot unveils the new 408 fastback crossover globally Yesterday, Peugeot unveiled the new 408 fastback crossover. The 408 is based on the 308 hatchback, and will compete with the likes of the Citroen C4 and Renault Arkana.
At the front, the 408 has a radical, large grille with body-coloured streaks all across. The headlight design is similar to that of the 308, and features ‘lion’s fang’ DRLs.
The 408 has a sloping roofline and a very coupe-esque side profile, with ‘lion’s claw’ tail-lights at the rear and a black bumper insert at the bottom. Methinks the 408 could do without so much black plastic cladding, and it would still retain some sort of a crossover-ish stance. Hopefully newer crossovers start doing away with this odd crossover design trait.
The 408’s interior is similar to the interior of the 308 on which it’s based on. The car features Peugeot’s i-Cockpit 10-inch driver’s display, with a small flat-bottomed steering wheel below it. The car also has a large 10-inch touchscreen tilted towards the driver, with few physical buttons to be seen.
Power comes from either a 1.2L PureTech 3-cylinder that outputs 120hp or a PHEV system featuring a 1.6L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that can output either 180hp or 225hp. There is no manual option, as all engine combinations will be mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission.
The 408 will go on sale at the beginning of 2023, and is expected to start at £30,000 (28.66 lakh rupees). Peugeot is also working on an e-408 that will be released after the ICE and PHEV models.
BHPians, what are your thoughts on the 408? Could either it or the C4 make its way to our shores?
