According to media reports, the German auto giant will sell fewer cars, allowing them to concentrate on developing more profitable premium vehicles. The company's CFO, Arno Antlitz stated that Volkswagen's main goal is margins and quality rather than volume and market share.

Antlitz also stated that they plan to reduce the range of petrol and diesel cars, consisting of over 100 models across different brands, by 60 per cent in Europe over the next eight years.

Reports suggest that the change in Volkswagen's strategy is a sign of profound change in the auto sector since the brand has always been attempting to make profits by increasing sales volume.

Are premium cars increasing their berth in the share market to extent of giving enough profit to run the business?

Thomas Schafer, the CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars, confirmed that the brand will stop selling cars once the current line up finishes its life cycle.

Meanwhile its sister brand Cupra continued to climb in the European ranking with more expensive models, hence more profits for the group. The success of the Cupra Formentor was the key element to take this decision.

Between January and July 2023, Seat was the 19th bestselling brand in Europe with 155,355 units up by 13%, whereas Cupra was two positions behind with 111,829 units, up by 47%. The Cupra Formentor sold more than any other Seat model.

The move is wise: more potential, higher prices, and more profits.
